Perfect example of book knowledge vs practical experience. Any experienced engineer would have said "maybe it's a bad idea".

Jip, instead of arguing on forums, read what sortof happened and learn from it.

I should not be taking a lift in Joburg CBD but I still do.

Everyone calling the grandfather a dumbass and assuming he did it... Must be experience speaking. Funny, it seems the exception to me, id automatically assume he didn't.

Either way, proof of either story is totally lacking, so assumptions are meaningless.

Heh? It's not like grandpa at any point claimed he wasn't there and wasn't looking after the toddler?

And yes it's definitely experience speaking of having children and looking after them, **** hits the fan in the blink of an eye.

Now you're being economical with the truth. You were not merely suggesting the **** hit the fan. If you were, and it was experience talking, you wouldn't be riding that high horse so proudly over this family's tragic loss.

Sounds suspiciously like a convenient excuse to blame someone else.
It’s the kakkest excuse I’ve ever heard for someone doing something utterly stupid.
Did he mean to dangle her out of a window for shits and giggles and then lost his grip or footing? Absolutely.

You or I know little about what actually happened.

yeah.. ive often seen people hold kids up to a window so their hands and feet press against it, ive morbidly wondered what would unfold if they didnt realise the window is open.

Heh? Where did I ever suggest anything otherwise?

Mistakes were made by the person in charge of the kid at the time, that is all that really matters here.

It's not anyone else's negligence.

You or I know little about what actually happened.

We do know that the kid couldn't reach the window by themselves and therefore was assisted in doing so.

Therefore negligence was in play regardless of exactly what happened step for step. Or much worse it maybe even have been on purpose, although I doubt that highly.

How are those windows opened? Who opened it?

Not sure if hinged or sliding, but from that height, that seems dangerous for adults and kids alike.

I see now, does look a sliding window.

But then by that logic every window ever is dangerous on any higher rise building.

If it's above the navel and below the shoulder (as it appears in the picture) then it would be pretty damn hard to just fall out of.

Based on https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/thr...ped-out-of-open-window’.1037121/post-23790075 post, I doubt it to be below shoulder.
With the ship moving due to e.g. waves, there is a chance of falling out I'd say, the question is more how likely.

I meant in the zone above your navel below your shoulder. If it's higher than your shoulder then there really is no concern at all.

But that's also why the railing is there so you aren't right up to the window and have something to hold onto. The rails are at least 30 centimetres (probably more) away from the windows, so you need to be actively trying to fall out of that window to manage it.

I have spent a great deal of time on various vessels in my life time of every shape and size in every weather condition possible, including sports yachts and it's really quite difficult to fall off them even with no windows present at all.

A cruise ship hardly moves.

Zooming in on https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/attachments/1563138579797-png.683707/ you see the wooden railing is about navel height with the window above that, solid glass below.

No need to zoom to also see the railing that is 30-40cm away from said window which makes the height almost irrelevant as it would require a major stretch to get over that and out of the window.
