why is Porsche/audi listed separate from VW when kia isnt listed and hyundai is?

Because although some manufacturers own more than one brand, the list is of the brands, not the holding companies of those brands.

And the ‘most appealing’ car brand of 2017 is…

You’ve no doubt have heard of JD Power. Indeed, you’ll likely already have read the results of its 2017 US Initial Quality Study, which ranks automakers for overall initial quality.

And now the US research company has released the results of its 2017 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study. And the automaker at the very top of the pile? None other than Porsche, for the thirteenth consecutive year…

The study seeks to measure “owners’ emotional attachment and level of excitement across 77 attributes, ranging from the power they feel when they step on the gas to the sense of comfort and luxury they feel when climbing into the driver’s seat”.

JD Power says these attributes are combined into an overall index score that is measured on a 1 000-point scale. The study, now in its 22nd year, is based on responses gathered from February through May 2017 from nearly 70 000 US purchasers and lessees of new 2017 model-year vehicles who were surveyed after 90 days of ownership.

In this year’s study, the industry average index increased to 810 points, with the gap between premium and mass-market brands closing. JD Power says the average index score for the non-premium segment (804) improved by 10 points year over year, while the premium segment (845) improved by just 1 point.

Porsche ranked highest with an index score of 884, while Hyundai’s Genesis sub-brand took second overall (869), followed by BMW (855), Audi (854) and Mercedes-Benz (851).

Chrysler was deemed the most improved brand (815), with a 41-point improvement from 2016. Other brands with strong improvements included Mini (+30 points), Nissan (+27) and Honda (+25).

Jeep, Fiat and Mitsubishi found themselves at the foot of the table.

Hyundai’s Genesis sub-brand took second overall (869)

That is pretty impressive. Pity we don't get them here, although they would be overpriced even if we were able to purchase them locally

They are a rather poor seller in the Euro countries as well. People just don't value or expect Sunday to play in that level of the game yet.

And the world’s most valuable car brand in 2017 is…

Yes, it’s that time of the year already. The folks over at Interbrand, a leading brand agency, have revealed their 2017 Best Global Brands report, which lists the most valuable brands in the world.

Apple, Google and Microsoft took the top three spots overall, but naturally we’re most interested in the automotive sector. So, which automaker leads the way in the 18th annual instalment of the report?

Well, Toyota again claimed pole position (and seventh overall), despite its brand value falling some six percent. Mercedes-Benz took second spot, growing its brand value ten percent, while BMW remained static in third.

Honda, Ford and Hyundai occupied fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, while Audi again took seventh. Nissan, meanwhile, climbed one place to eighth, pushing Volkswagen down to ninth. And Porsche grabbed the final spot on the table.

Interestingly, Ferrari entered the top 100 (in 88th place overall) this year, with Tesla claiming 98th. Kia Motors (69), Land Rover (73) and Mini (87) also secured places in the top 100.

The rankings are based on three key components that contribute to a brand’s cumulative value: the financial performance of the branded products and services; the role the brand plays in influencing customer choice; and the strength the brand has to command a premium price or secure earnings for the company.

The world’s most valuable car brands (with overall ranking in parentheses):

1. Toyota (7)
2. Mercedes-Benz (9)
3. BMW (13)
4. Honda (20)
5. Ford (33)
6. Hyundai (35)
7. Audi (38)
8. Nissan (39)
9. Volkswagen (40)
10. Porsche (48)

These are the world's most valuable car brands

Toyota has retained its spot as the most valuable automotive brand followed by Mercedes-Benz and BMW, according to the Best Global Brands 2017 report.

The annual report by New York-based consultancy Interbrand lists the top 100 most valuable brands in the world, and 16 automotive companies have made the grade in the latest survey.

Unsurprisingly, the world’s two most valuable brands overall are Apple and Google, which have traded positions atop the list for the past five years. Toyota retains its spot as the most valuable car brand, but has slipped from fifth place overall in 2016 to seventh with a 6% decline in brand value.

Mercedes-Benz is ranked second among car firms and in ninth place overall with 10% growth from last year, while BMW holds steady in third spot with 0% growth year on year. Honda (+3%) and Ford (+5%) round out the top five automotive firms, while Ferrari makes its first appearance in the list down in 88th position.

Interbrand bases its rankings on three key components: the financial performance of the branded products and services, the role the brand plays in influencing customer choice, and the strength the brand has to command a premium price or secure earnings for the company.

Therefore, while the rankings are listed in terms of brand value in dollars, these values are not representative of brands’ annual revenue. Apple in the number one spot for instance, is ranked by Interbrand with a $184.1-billion brand value, but its annual revenue is closer to $220-billion.

Top 16 automotive brands:

7. Toyota: $50.3-billion

9. Mercedes-Benz: $47.8-billion

13. BMW: $41.5-billion

20. Honda: $22.7-billion

33. Ford: $13.6-billion

35. Hyundai: $13.2-billion

38. Audi: $12-billion

39. Nissan: $11.5-billion

40. Volkswagen: $11.5-billion

48. Porsche: $10.1-billion

69. Kia: $6.7-billion

73. Land Rover: $6-billion

77. Harley Davidson: $5.7-billion

87. Mini: $5.1-billion

88. Ferrari: $4.9-billion

98. Tesla: $4-billion

Top ten brands overall

1. Apple: $184.1-billion

2. Google: $141.7-billion

3. Microsoft: $80-billion

4. Coca-Cola: $69.7-billion

5. Amazon: $64.8-billion

6. Samsung: $56.2-billion

7. Toyota: $50.3-billion

8. Facebook: $48.2-billion

9. Mercedes-Benz: $47.8-billion

10. IBM: $46.8-billion

Tesla increased its brand value by a massive 60 percent to $9,4-billion to retain eighth place, within touching distance of the Ingolstadt-based automaker above it.

Maruti Suzuki grabbed ninth (with a brand value of $6,38-billion), while Volkswagen likewise returned to the table to snaffle tenth, growing its brand value to just under $6-billion. Land Rover and Porsche, which occupied the final two places in 2017, thus fall from the table.
