Topographical mapping for Symbian

I've been using GPS voice-guided route planning for about a year now using Route 66 and, more recently, Garmin Mobile XT.

I was wondering how to go about using topographic maps on the Symbian platform (Nokia E61). I've got a set of topographic maps from Tracks4Africa. Can I load these into Garmin Mapsource and then transfer them into Mobile XT?

Thanks!

Hi Strong

There is a DVD available for R50-00 that has Southern Africa Topo and Recreational maps.

The maps are 1:50 000 with 20 metre contour lines.

Once you have the DVD in and running, connect the GPS and then it becomes an internet transaction.

I do believe that tracks for Africa may work, they do on Garmin GPS units.

The unlock code will cost you R 2530-00 if you have no previous version of Topo.

Okay, so if I obtain these maps how do I get them onto the phone? Do I use the same Garmin MapSource app that I used to get the street maps onto the phone? Also, if this is the way to do it, how do I choose between street mapping and topo mapping on the Garmin Mobile XT app on the phone?

Slightly OffTopic, but where and how did you get Garmin Mobile XT in SA? How much did you pay for it?

Then OnTopic, I have seen the garmin topographical southern africa maps at the outdoor places (due south tygervalley espeiclally) for about R800.

Yes that is the way to do it. Also if you go for the Topo Maps (on the same DVD) no need to download the Streets as the Topo map is auto routing as well.

Any Symbian OS phone can use Mobile XT. You will need a card large enough for the Data and the Garmin GPS 10X unit sells for R 2 380-00 plus VAT.

Thanks guys. You've been most helpful.

One last question: Suppose I install the topo maps on the phone. Will everything still work as before in terms of street voice navigation? What about the points of interest like speed traps and toll gates that I've uploaded to the phone? Do I need to delete the Garmin street maps from the phone or will the topo maps overwrite those automatically? Hopefully I might even be able to swith between the street and topo maps on the phone?

An alternative to the Garmap topo maps, is AfricaTopo.

It works with well with Tracks4Africa.

Not sure how to get it working on a Mobile platform, but is it a Garmin compatible map, so should be the same as any other Garmin map with Garmin Mobile XT.

It seems like you can use the TopoAfrica maps as an overlay for Tracks4Africa giving you the best of both worlds.
