TopTV struggling to compete with DStv

Give me the sport channels and I'll cancel DSTV today. That's all we ever watch on it - sport. I still hire movies - that way I can watch what I want, when I want.

Agreed... well, except for the movie hiring part :). I use other means to get them

To be fair, DSTV is incredible value just for the sports. Very mediocre sports coverage within the UK that includes half the premier league games is £50 a month. You won't find a visiting foreigner who isn't flabbergasted at what we get for our money. Everything else on DSTV is just extra.

I can live without DSTV np, I meanb with a broadband connection who needs tv, how many here can honestly say that they still watch tv. As for sports, I feel if you wanna watch a game just go to a pub or something.

The problem with sitting in a pub is you have to breathe in everyone's toxic waste (smoke) and deal with drunk hooligans who are also watching the sport.

I'd much rather not watch at all than watch sports at a pub.

Yup, for sport dstv is actually incredibly cheap. We see more sport soccer than the english people. Supersport may be a monopoly but it has some of the best sport coverage on the planet.

World class in terms of content. I have no issues paying 600 bucks for all the sport i watch. I also enjoy the news channels but i can watch those online but i pay for the sport so i watch it as well :D

I am basically paying for sport which i have no issues. I went to a pub for rugby and spent 450 on booze and food. One game cost almost the same as entire month of dstv.

Yup, I watch nothing on dstv but sport, 90% football. I get to watch 100% of the games my team plays (not always guaranteed to be the case at a pub, many games at same time), and other random bits like motogp and f1, and of course tons of cricket. For me, it's entertainment, and I have no problem paying it.

For me, tv series on dstv is not for me, I want to watch when it comes out (tbf dstv is getting better at this, homeland season 2 started 3 days after US airing)

Dear Top TV,

If you want to kill off Monochoice, its fairly easy, create a Netflicks like system, that offers hd streaming, needs no subscription, and is affordable for the masses, not the R25 that DSTV expects already subscribed customers to pay.Later on when DSTV is at its weakest, start adding your series to it, and fund it via ad revenue, like what Hulu has done.Stop focusing on a old non functional system like satalite.

Kind Regards.
Every internet user.

PS Break them into peaces.

Double Fine.

TopTV was never going to compete with DSTV. It was always a low cost alternative to DSTV & a cheap bolt on to standard SABC & ETV.

DSTV knows that Supersport is the key to it's success. In a country where sport & religion is interwtined :p

I love having the PVR facility but I am miffed that I have to pay the "access" fee. Like wise the xtra view why must I cough up and extra 1K for a decoder & switch then still have to pay an access fee.

Nag nag moan moan but every month I do the EFT 1st in my list of things to oay. :D

Do you mean Double post? I only posted once and both your qoutes point to the same post =9112374#post9112374

I think he means he +2 approves of your post instead of the usual garden variety +1.

Ironically, Telkom may be our saviour in this regard.

Killing off Multichoice is not easy at all. In fact it's all but impossible. The vice grip they have on all the sports means they'll be fine. Most people have DSTV for the sport. While this may not be true for you, market research has shown it to be the case.

I have no problem with DSTV. We have the best and cheapest sports coverage on earth, important sport is usually in HD and the only local show I watch, Carte Blanche, is in HD and exclusive to M-Net.

Syfy is some mythical channel that people think has awesome content 24/7.

meanwhille, it has like 2 decent shows a week

Ok TOP TV, listen to me. I will tell you why you are failing and what you need to do to fix it. Ignore my advice at your own peril:

1. Get Sport channels even if you have to borrow money for the rights. South African is a sport crazy nation. Get it?
2. Get HD channels. People expect to see their sports and movies on HD. Period.
3. Get better content. No point in repeating old stuff all the time.
4. Get better receivers. People want to record shows. That means PVR's. It is unthinkable that TOPTV in this day and age still has no PVR receivers.
5. Keep pushing for adult content. Their is a fertile market waiting for you. Sex sells. You have been unfairly treated but you should pursue all legal avenues to redeem yourselfs. The censorship they imposed on you is nonsense.
6. Sort out your billing issues and customer service. There must be something wrong if so many people are complaining.
7. Get rid of weak management.

Only if you do all this, will you be able to be a worthwhile competitor to DSTV. If not, you will keep on struggling for survival.

TopTV need to diversify somewhat. Although it is the cheapest offering in the TV market they should also look at providing the service to more affluent subscribers with a 'streaming over broadband' or 'pay per view option'. A couple of sport channels would probably do good too.

Sports are incredibly expensive, and the licenses are almost always exclusive. Multichoice's biggest expense by a country mile is its sports. I'd rather the sport stayed in one place so I don't need another satellite TV subscription that needs an additional dish and hundreds more in monthly costs.
