TopTV to be bought by Chinese firm?

If this goes through it can only be a good thing.

Well, at least we know it can't get any worse from here

ICASA must remove this limit in foreign ownership, we need a experieced company and company with deep pockets to take on Multi Choice

You're delusional if you think that's what's going to happen. When international companies buy into SA ones they don't do it to shake up the competition, they do it because they see how easy it is to make massive profits with crappy service here. Example: Wal-mart buying Assmart.

True but I can't see how they could possibly make any money (let alone massive profits) from TopTV without vastly improving it first. TopTV gets [much] better, DStv suffers [a little], consumers get another option, Chinese make money. Wins all round, yes?

They run successful content in other african nations- I would be a little more enthusiastic if it was a company competing successfully in Europe or America.

Unfortunately MultiChoice has a stranglehold on popular sport. While this situation prevails no other company will survive. A way has to be found to share out all sport equitably without one company having a sole mandate it. Perhaps all sport should be opened up to all companies with each paying pro-rata according to their subscriber numbers ?

In the end its greed that always wins. Remember that Sabc used to broadcast F1, then when dstv got the rights, sabc used to play the recorded races late on Sunday nite. Then dstv must have figured that they will get extra numbers by not sharing with sabc.
