I personally prefer torque is the value one must look at when buying a performance or normal car. Acceleration is the most important. We are not allowed to drive more than 120 on SA's public roads anyways , so kw's is no big deal

the kw on my tdi makes me sad. the smoke from the remap makes me even sadder. but then the nm makes me smile.

yep...what makes me sad is when 1.9 tdi's leave me in plumes of smoke and jsut accelerate like no one's business!

I know NM's is also good for insane burnouts!!!

What nm does the 1.9TDI make?

My moms Touareg makes 750nm ... if you Google, you can see one of the publicity stunts where it pulled a 155 ton Boeing at 5mph

My stock 1.9tdi mkv was making about 250nm. After remap its making 350nm - which is being limited by the dsg. If u remapped the mechatronic it would pull more then 350 but would burn out the clutches very quickly.

IIRC about 230-250Nm?

SWAMBO's A3 2.0 Tdi makes 320Nm. That car is a dream to drive in traffic. Put foot and don't look back

The one thing you have to worry about is the EGT - excessive EGT are the no.1 killer of TD engines.

So get your remap, but you should also get your exhaust manifold ceramic-coated, a bigger intercooler, silicon hoses, etc. Basically anything that reduces the EGT of the engine.

And fit an EGT monitor, as soon as the temperature goes beyond 600-650, you slow down until the EGT comes down.

Also one other thing to prolong the turbo's life is to always let your engine idle for 1-4 minutes before you switch off, esp if you have been driving fast over a long distance.

Exhaust Gas Temperature

A diesel pushes out EGT at far higher temps than a petrol engine. It is not uncommon for the EGT on a TD to be pushing close to 750C after a 'spirited' drive uphill.

You can get EGT monitors from various places like Autostyle, but I would recommend you get one fitted by an experienced TD mechanic. I have one of these in my landy: http://www.landyonline.co.za/workshop/engine_instruments/egt_gauges.html.

Some people fit the EGT probes & gauges from avionics shops.

assuming one drives carefully i.e idling properly before switching off engine etc, how long does the 1.9 Tdi turbo last... I'm on 130k and debating keeping the car till it goes to the scrapyard or getting a new car...hmmm

I'm intrigued in the last part there, since renault claim you can shutdown immediately as new turbos do not suffer from the problem that required a "cool-down" period. Or are you referring to doing that once the re-map is done?

Maybe there is a mechanism in Renault's engine that keeps the turbo spinning even after the engine is shutdown? Dunno, you would have to check manually and/or with a Renault mechanic.

well, that's the risk you take with a remap. You get better performance, but if you don't reduce the EGT and/or increase engine cooling, you will kiss your TD goodbye quicker!

I've never driven a turbo car and should be collecting one today or tomorrow. So other than the idling after driving - anything else I should watch out for?
