Torrent and p2p

SO I tried to get WinMX working. Using SP2 firewall. Opened the TCP and UDP ports it needs. SO it searches. When I try to download however there is a problem. Is it not possible to use it at all or have I missed a trick?

Tried a torrent as well (using TorrenTopia). The speeds were less than 1kB/s. The tests indicate a connection speed of greater than 300kbps

It's more likely to be WBS shaping P2P on iBurst, but firewall logs etc should give an indication as to whether anything is being blocked on your side :).

no to both of you, scuse me gents, i know a little summn summn about torrents

lilg if his port was closed he would get NO DATA not 1KB
ic, its not shaping, even people on cable have this problem

jongi, tell me about the torrent, how many peers and how many can you connect to, and more importantly how many seeds. also how much have you uploaded, the torrent protocol unmodded is reliant that you can send data to peers consistently or they pick other peers over you.

if you are looking for tricks, the old socks proxy trick still works, or get a torrentflux account </shamelessplug>

No problemo, but for the sake of helping others that might have the same sort of problem(s) in the future, how does one know that it isn't due to WBS shaping P2P - what symptoms should one be aware of?

they are shaping it, but the reeeeally slow speeds ussually arent due to shaping, if the shaping is causing the bad performance you can tell because you will not be able to connect to more than 8 peers, so you'll have 120 peers in a swarm and say 20 seeds and you'll only be able to connect to 7 or less

Ok, what about his upload speed being a factor in all this? Perhaps he could post the results from an online speed test...?

its his torrent speed that counts and yes the more he uploads the better his download speed will be because peers will give him preference, i guess if he tests his HTTP upload and it sucks he can expect it would be a problem for torrents too

Telkom Test

Code:
    * Download time: 12.297 seconds
    * Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
    * Estimated line speed: 331.8 (kilobits/second)
    * Estimated line speed: 40.7 (kiloBytes/second)

Interestingly that's with all 4 lights on. My iBurst Terminal tells me 0% signal strength so I can't even try to optimise that.

because as we told you, you are using ethernet and cannot use the iburst terminal on ethernet, only USB, plug it in usb, start a download and get a stronger signal because with 4 leds and 331kbit i can tell you you have only tapped into a 3rd of your utd power, gotta find the sweet spot man

I think I'm on the edge of a coverage area. Is it likely that an antenna will help?

By that I mean, I have 3 LEDs most of the time and at 250kbps+ most of the time. By how much could I expect an antenna to boost speed?

Is there a particular Torrent client that works well with iBurst?

Jongi its not dependent on the client its the type of traffic so no client will be any different...

jongi dont be so sure that you dont have a spot somewhere where you can get 5 lights, ive seen it time and time again, look before you go paying for an antenna take time out to get 90 - 100% signal if you can, if after trying you're convinced you can't then yes, an external antenna will help.

Also you should attempt to config your torrent client so you look for peers, dont assume they'll come to you because with WBS shaping thier requests can get dropped. If you are desperate find a proxy server to use, you can get full speed with torrents using a socks proxy, but beware its not for the squeemish, it takes trial and error unless you pay for access to a dedicated proxy which i dont see anyone on this froum doing.

I found a spot where I'm getting 70% consistently. Sometimes moves to 80% and even 90%. The Telkom test seems to be 350kbps+. Would an aerial get me closer to 1Mbps?

So if the test shows a HTTP speed of say 40kB/s, is that the type of speed I should expect from a torrent.

It is the first time I am using a torrent, so how do I ensure that it looks for peers. slimothy can you direct towards a socks proxy and instructions on how to set it up using iBurst?

ye look ok now you need to multithread, you see if your signal is say 70 - 100% you can still get badish speeds like 50 - 70KB/s, but if you multithread you should be able to top 100, probably get 110KB/s, set up your browser to multithread, use firefox and get a download manager like flashget or download accelarator

jongi i emplore you not to listen to this idiot, he spams all over the place knows nothign about torrents or iburst and thinks he has a 54mbit vdsl connection, everything he said is rubbish and the tracker doesnt define ports the peers do, and you actually have a better shot using non standard ports (is any port BUT the ones he mentioned)

he is such a complete idiot and yet offers advise, ignore him and maybe he'll die

oh and lil g, HE WAS TALKING ABOUT HIS OVERALL SPEED ON HTTP NOT ON TORRENTS YOU TIT, and the front ends are in php NOT the tracker you knob, they are coded in python or c and non of the advise helps with packet shaping, so please lil g stop it, just stay in the off topic section untill you know what you're talking about
