Had a little oopsie daisies moment yesterday and grated the plastic (non painted) section of my bumper against a rock.

The scratches are superficial but visible - does anyone have a good contact or any moderately simple DIY ideas?

Insurance will raise your premiums and even if they don't the repair will cost less than the excess most likely. I've done some plastic bumper repair work and its not that difficult if its scratches. If its a textured bumper then sandpapering will make it look crappy. If its smooth then get some 200, 400, 1000 and 1500 (or finest you can get) grit sandpaper. Start over the area with the roughest paper, then go over it with the smoother paper ending off with the 1500 grit. I've done it on a cracked bumper which I fixed up and sprayed. Looked good as new.

Where does this belief come from?

I have heard a number of people state as fact that premiums will shoot up the moment you claim... Between my wife and I we have had four claims over the last 2 years (one of them over R100k) and there has been no increase in premiums, punitive or otherwise... wtf?

Are you referring to one of those insurance companies that advertise in the back of the You magazine? :p

I claimed once a year ago for a small scrape on my golf 5. It was R7000, excess R3000 and then my premiums went up R60 a month. I'm insured with MUA. They're supposed to be really good, erm besides the premium hike thing heheh. They pay out without an issue and they are cheaper than my 4 other quotes for insurance even with the increase.

your premiums go up if its your fault or liability if not your premiums stay the same IIRC

Mine went up R200-00 after my accident. Momentum STI. Can't go for anyone else really. They all quote me over R1200 anyway for my Getz.

What if fault was never determined? I turned at intersection. Stopped first and looked at oncomming double lane but saw no-one on the far side. Closer side at opposite end was turning in. I started to turn across but when out of nowhere there was a car I stopped. Still clipped me and took my front off.

I say the other driver probably changed lanes behind the turning cars on opposite side because looking down that lane when I had view before turning in I saw nothing. The driver was also going fast and did not slow down at intersection...what if I was a pedestrian? or if I had stalled? Legal department at insurance companies never came back to me though. They just upped the premium.

you pay. or even if the guy that smashed into you delays the process by saying its your fault etc for the duration of the court battle your premiums will go up, once fault is determined you can request a review of your premiums. oh and you guys should request a review every three months cos the value of your car (regardless of make except for ferrari or something) will drop.

oh ok. Makes sense I suppose. Someone else told me not to bother much now because they sometimes take many months to sort it out.
