Who would've that the Long street fan park was only for VIP's, if this is the situation for the draw i can only wonder what the actual tournament will be like. Thanks fifa and the organizing commitee. You just made me realize that in the end, you guys are elitist pricks, so stop your bs rhetoric.

Were you there? I just thought that a fifa fan park would be open to the general public, but apparently not.

Fifa and their lucky guests go for free. Transport, food best seats, goodie bags. Us normal people foot the bill while they lap up the luxury. Fifa is making stupid money. The obs feast got cancelled since fifa does not want anything takin the attention away from their precious tournament. Lonp live the fat cats.

Who foots the bill? Do you think fifa are poor or something?

Do you have any idea how much money fifa makes off a world cup that is broadcast in just about every country on the planet?

Just because you think something does not mean that is how it will be either. Maybe you should find out instead of thinking.

Blah blah blah complain whinge moan.... same old same old.

Roll on 2010! Roads being improved. Beachfront being repaved in Durban. Transport system being greatly improved. Google street view and directions being implemented. Foreign money pouring into our country. Priceless tourism publicity being gained at every turn of the head......

And still people moan!

If what you are saying is in fact true then you will find that the draw was always bound to have more security. You had all the top officials and representatives of all the participating countries in one place. For the actual games these people will be spread around the country.

As regards them not wanting this to be a tournament for the people of South Africa have you had a look at the ticket pricing?

The world cup is not about a tournament for the SA people. Why do people think that is the case?

I think it goes without saying that if a country hosts the tournament you need to ensure that you facilitate the people of that country. You need them to buy into the tournament if you want it to be a success.

FIFA has shown this by drastically reducing the ticket prices for South African residents for example. A further example of this is the "people's parks" which are being built. You cannot have a function in someone's house and totally ignore the host.

Yes but my point lance is that world cups are not for the people of that country, they do not make tickets cheap for the local people.

A world cup injects plenty money into a country and tourism is off the chart, that is what the world cup brings to the table for the host nations.

There is nothing they do for the host nations in terms of pricing and what not. They are not looking for the host nations to supply the people going to games. They want tourists going to the game.

They will more than likely give free tickets away if they can to make the stands full.
That way the next suckers who bid for the WC can think that the stadiums were full of tourists who spend mega $$$$$$$

It seems that it is in fact for the people.
The people have already started robbing the foreigner scum.

Foreign SWC journalists robbed
2009-12-05 14:03

Cape Town - South African media reported on Saturday that two foreign television crews were robbed in Cape Town on Friday ahead of the draw for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The Argus newspaper said that a BBC crew filming on one of the scenic routes in the city had expensive camera equipment stolen by a group of robbers who smashed the windows of the camera crews' car.

BBC producer Andrew Bell said that they had reported the incident to the police.

"We weren't that far away, but they were so quick - in and out like a flash," he said.

Meanwhile two German journalists, who were walking to their car in the centre of town, were accosted by a group of men armed with knives and told to hand over their valuables.

They gave them their wallets, cellphones and air tickets.

Earlier on Friday, journalists had to abandon the Cape Town International Convention Centre after a hoax bomb scare.

The scare, which forced the evacuation of the entrance to the centre for under an hour, was the second in the city before the draw, which was attended by thousands of prominent guests and media.

A journalist was arrested after claiming he had an explosive device in his bag, which he dropped and then tried to run away.

Also on Friday, a South African was arrested over two hoax calls outlining a threat to Cape Town international airport. The man was tracked down "within minutes" via the cellphone he used to make the calls to a Cape Town suburb.

Security issues are one of the main concerns at the World Cup.

You are totally wrong there! There are ticket prices specific to South African citizens. Some examples :

Group Matches (No 2 to 48)
Cat 1 = R1,120 Cat 2 = R840 Cat 3 = R560 Cat 4 = R140

The Final (No 64)
Cat 1 = R6,300 Cat 2 = R4,200 Cat 3 = R2,800 Cat 4 = R1,050

Category 4 tickets are reserved for South African residents only.

Those are major discounts for SA residents! Yes, the tickets are not pitch side but you will be able to experience a Soccer World cup match for less than a Currie Cup rugby match!

They will more than likely give free tickets away if they can to make the stands full.
That way the next suckers who bid for the WC can think that the stadiums were full of tourists who spend mega $$$$$$$

Not bad so far... out of all tickets offered so far 90% have been sold, with just under 50% of those being to foreigners. And all of that before the teams had even qualified or the draw had been done!

So far, a total of 674,403 tickets have been sold, corresponding to 90% of the tickets made available to date. Of those tickets, 53.6% (361,582) have been purchased by South African residents. The foreign country that has purchased the most tickets is the United States (84,103 tickets), followed by the UK (48,388), Germany (25,112), Australia (17,876), Canada (11,662), Switzerland (11,045), Japan (10,558) and Brazil (8,006).

And when it comes to mega dollars it is going to be rather difficult to attach a dollar value to the "free" publicity South Africa will get from the exposure of the world cup and the resultant tourism from this publicity.

Not sure which Long St you were at -

Cape Town - So many fans had packed into Cape Town's 2010 draw street festival by Friday evening that authorities began turning people away.

City spokesperson Kylie Hatton said organisers had planned for 18 000 people, but by 18:00, 31 000 had entered the cordoned off area of Long Street in the city centre

Free, for nothing, all welcome.

The OP clearly misinterpreted getting turned away because of numbers as getting turned away to cater for "elitist pricks"....
