I understand that in my town a Tow truck Company has a 5 year contract with the Traffic Department to be advised of any accident. Is this the system throughout South Africa?

No it's not. Some Tow Truck companies rely on 'spotters'. Others by sitting on the roads all day.

One of our local tow truck companies recently advised that the best course of action was, in the event of an accident, to call them before calling an ambulance for injured people. Bunch of lowlifes. I wouldn't put it past them to pay traffic officers for tip-offs.

The last one that towed me, told me that if you phone him and tell him of an accident and he gets the tow, you get paid R350. So anyone can become a "spotter" as mentioned.

Hate these guys though - they drive like maniacs.

I've seen the same tow-truck company I mentioned cutting off ambulances on the way to the accident on a few occasions.

And its precisely why these days, I phone my insurance company and tell the tow trucker to go fsck himself. If he's on the panel he might get the work, if not he can just waste his time.

Yeah. Had some fscker tow my wifes car to a branch of the panel beating company. The closest branch was 5km away from the accident - he towed her to a different one, about 30km away from the scene.

And there's a third way. Buying walkie talkies from the cops. If you speak to the right cop you can get one for as little as R1k.
