Not to be critical , but I love his car.

But when he has the flair and intellect to design and build his own car - clearly showing an understanding of the workings of a car - do they take him and train him to be a mechanic.

Help him instead to go on a bridging course and help to study toward an engineering degree.

I mean he already managed to build a prize winning electric car - evidently he has the talent and ability.

So they think, he is only good enough to be a mechanic - fsk this man( yes I am mad)

"My short-term goal is to open a motor mechanic workshop in my village and create much-needed jobs," he said.
If these are indeed his short-term goals then who are we to judge him?
After he has completed his short-term goals, he can continue to improve himself.

But, if he does not know that mechatronics or mechanical design and engineering exist, then it is very wrong of Nissan to use him as a marketing tool like this.

Does he have the ability to become an engineer though?

He has already managed to build a prize winning electric car - he definitely has some understanding.

Why not give him a go in a formal environment. instead of packing him off to a bloody workshop(not that there's anything wrong with it - just better opportunities and career options)

+ 1000

Nissan SA grabbed this as a PR opportunity. If they really wanted to help him, they would have sponsored him for an engineering qualification.

Does ha have the math & science aptitude in order to do a B.Eng? You can win a prize in a school science compo but that does no qualify you to become and engineer.

By all means if he has what it takes then Nissan should sponsor his university education rather than using him as a pr stunt.

awesome for the dude! but as one the comments said, all well Nissan training him to be a mechanic, he really needs more, government should use some of the money they use to buy the million rand cars and sponsor him a proper education in engineering.

that is why I said bridging course 1st - to see if he can adapt and get to grips with the demands of uni and an engineering course.

If you pass the the bridging courses it's used as an entry into uni for peeps that didn't have the advantage of a proper grounding in certain subjects.

How good do you think his math and science teacher was in rural limpopo ?

Fair enough.

From what I have seen in rural KZN I would have to say pretty bad unfortunately.

Agreed on the Eng part. Like all things in life with dedication and belief anything can be achieved!

he built this with limited to no resources at all, I think he should be able to fly through a B.Eng degree...people's upbringing and culture and environment usually tells outsiders a tale of their abilities, but to the people living there its a totally different story. It's strange how we would have shrugged this design off if it was from some white private school kid in upclass Cape Town or Johanesburg...

I agree though, Nissan is really short sighted, lots of Uni students can study and grasp concepts but to actually carry this out without any conceptual training and background is really amazing...this guy might be one of those boy geniuses that just never gets discovered...

This is the issue i have with the article, its a PR article for Nissan SA and not for the intelligence and will of Augustine Mabasa. Honestly i think its a smack in his face. The guy obviously already has more mechanical knowledge than most mechanics out there and they make his achievement seem as though he has a vast amount of talent, enough to rival the big corporates and they send him off on a mechanics course.

If it was a guy from a "White" school, regardless of his skin colour, this feat would be shrugged off.Hell if any of the technically minded guys on myBB did this we all would have looked at it (if he posted it), marvelled at it,suggested some ideas and then proceed forget about it.there would be no mention of "henry ford" etc etc

I just think that the guy is getting the wrong kind of encouragement from the media

yep..its a great looking car, I like it...kinda Rat Rod style LOL...but ja, Nissan sucks even MORE now that they've went and done this...

But why would we shrug our shoulders if it were an upclass kidd? Do we have so little faith in ANYTHING good coming from poverty stricken communities or blacks in shanties or coloureds in the Cape Flats???
