Hi
I drive a ten year old Toyota Avensis and I think it is at that time when it will need a good mechanic. Can anyone recommend a solid mechanic? Someone who actually cares about cars and is good at trouble shooting problems and fixing it properly.

I am a bit wary of the corporate culture - I will use the Toyota dealerships if I have to, but I know their focus is to maximise revenue to satisfy listed company targets. I have used the Toyota service centres since inception, but find them to be indifferent.

I am not fussy about price and don't want a backstreet mechanic.

Anyone find such a miracle decent service centre out there?

I live in the Rosebank, Jhb area.

Is there anything in particular that needs to be looked at? As in current known problems or symptoms?

Unfortunately I can't direct you to a good private Toyota mechanic as I'm a VW owner. But perhaps see if there is a Toyota owners or enthusiast forum or Facebook page and pose the question there. They may be able to direct you to a good private mechanic.

Dealerships are only good for stamping your service book. Even while my car was under warranty I used a private mechanic to sort out non service stuff like brakes and clutch(replaced towards the end of my 5 year warranty)

I 'googled' Toyota on Facebook but did not see anything. I also did a quick search on Google but did not find a Toyota group. I booked my car in for Tuesday to have the alternator reconditioned as it was squeaking, the air con stopped working, the car is sluggish and may need a tune-up. The total repairs could be in the region of R40k I think if the Aircon ends up being a big job.
I intend keeping the car as long as possible - it has only 153000kms on the clock. It is worth paying for the repairs compared to spending R6k per month on a new car.
A great mechanic would be useful to look after my car in the long run.

A good normal mechanic should be fine. I have the same car and my mechanic has done 3 services and maintenance on the vehicle. It's pretty easy to maintain and not requiring any special treatment, parts seem to be easily available.

*in Durbs so can't help directly , sorry*
