World not ready for electric vehicles — Toyota

Toyota did not sign this week's pledge to phase out petrol and diesel power cars by 2040, as the company believes that large parts of the world are not ready for electric vehicles, Reuters reported.

The world's largest car manufacturer was not alone in its decision, with Volkswagen and several car markets in the US, China, and Germany also declining to sign the Glasgow Declaration on Zero Emission Cars and Vans.

Whats wrong with those damn Mongolians and Ethiopians not wanting electric cars.

Unpossible, SA for example can roll out and power hundreds of thousands of vehicles at stage 8

3rd world countries can't afford $40000 EVs. South African's have been downscaling to sub R200K ICE vehicles for years already. They're not about to start paying R500K for an EV just because of some environmental issues.

Extinction Rebellion is coming for you Toyota!

Well South Africa isn't able to support electric cars, I'm sure it's the same story in other shithole countries like ours.

So yea Toyota is not wrong.
No country in the world today can sustain an electric grid if every car was electric. Maybe Monaco or Singapore or those types of small super rich countries and oil rich Arab nations. But no other country would be able to do it.

Yup, Britain's idea of all cars being electric by 2030 is a pipe dream from some greenie (who didn't think where the electricity comes from anyway) politician. It's just not possible at the rate tech is developing and they'll rethink it come time.

... Well it's not *just* environmental issues. The R200k+ worth of filling up over 5 years in also a factor.

It seems like Norway is going to be the test case for the transition to electric vehicles. Will be interesting to see how they solve the problems.

Where do you get that figure from? Electricity is still cheaper than fuel by a long way.

The issue is the lack of quick charge stations, not the cost of electricity...
