Dacia might be "cheap" but it isn't crap. They make very decent "cheap" cars.

I don't own one, but I've read reviews and you don't see a lot of complaints.

Apart from the raised suspension and angry bits of tupperware these cross/angry/mad versions seems to the same as the normal ones.

The only reason that I can think is because it's a Toyota, and South Africans are so brainwashed into thinking that all Toyotas are superb, that they will buy it whether it looks like an unpolished turd or not.

This.

Toyota lost the plot years ago...wouldn't touch this brand with a barge pole.

Absolutely!

All you have to do is take a close look at an Etios and then do the same exercise with the Sandero and they are chalk and cheese - AND there's the safety aspect as well, which seems to be blissfully ignored by South Africans.

The Etios Cross is NOT a proper SUV in the sense. Toyota also said that. It's only a jacked up version from the normal Etios sedan/hatch. The height is still the same, the engine is exactly the same, everything is the same. If you want to go off-roading, this is not the car. Pay 50-200k more and get an entry-level SUV.

The Etios Cross is not that bad looking. It has some great features considering its a budget vehicle for R159k. It has more features than most vehicles in its class.

Besides, no matter what anyone has to say about Toyota, looking at engine quality and durability, there is no vehicle that will come close to them. Many years ago our company did a test on 5 bakkies. It was given to a single police station to run 24-hours a day. The outcome, within a month, 2 bakkies already went back for engine problems. In 5 months it was only the Toyota bakkie that was left running. They sponsored the Toyota to the police station. When I left the company, the police still drove the bakkie and it had 450k kilos.

I heard a number of similar stories from police stations reporting back on the quality of Toyota bakkies running 24 hours a day.

So, considering the price, the features and the quality of the engines made by Toyota, I will be looking past the design and say that this is a great buy.

I wouldn't get too excited about that "Toyota" engine - it's a very old generation 4 cylinder, built in India - never seen the inside of a real Toyota factory - it's longevity will have to prove itself.

Apart from not being able to live with the stick on plastic panels on the outside, I could not live with this car in a Million years!

Nah, the old Toyota engines have no need to prove themselves with me. I have seen them on many, many occasions. They are simply some of the best, no matter where they are made of put together.

Well, if you sit within a 100-160k price class, almost any vehicle you will buy will have plastic panels on the outside. You will not get an AMG or Porsche in that price range.

Will the std etios then have the same cross panels glued to the sides as the etios cross?

They almost have the same specs and the Renault have quite a bit more to offer - http://www.cars.co.za/compare-cars/...Renault-Sandero-66kW-turbo/60007440/54033250/, but at a price difference of 10k and more expensive Renault maintenance, I think the Toyota wins hands down.

You can throw as many comparisons at me, as you wish - I worked for Toyota when the Etios was launched, and that car is an embarrassment - the engine is NOT an old spec Corolla engine as you imply.

You sound as if you have been one of the crazy South Africans who has actually shelled out cash for one of these POS!!

Personally, if that was the type of car I was forced to buy ( thank God, it's not) I would rather spend an extra 20 k on a Sandero - You really are bluffing yourself about maintenance costs, BTW

He's not the only one..

These cheap cars are not hand me downs of great old Toyota technology like engines.. they're just not good at all.... The old Toyota engines were built properly and this is why they could last as long as they did. These new ones aren't in my opinion, they're built to a ridiculous budget, and therefore will suffer reliability issues.

Why buy the angry edition of any hatch to begin with?

God only knows

TB is correct - when these cars first arrived at the dealership, to say that the mechanics were horrified is putting it mildly - I had to make sure that prospective buyers didn't look too closely under the bonnet, or inadvertently knock the dipstick and feel it clatter around inside the engine!

I only sold one of them, as I talked most buyers into a used something else - anything else in the price range - the one that I did sell was to a local district nurse who begged me for it and if you looked at her trade in, which was a 1998 Meteor with around 300 000 very hard km on the clock, plus, a variety of panels picked up in various scrap yards, I guess it was an improvement!

Nothing against cars built in India, some are great, but the Etios seems to be the worst of the lot. I recall the first review in CAR mag showed they did not even use the final colour spray under the bonnet.

Those Meteors are true Fazda products. Nothing like an old tree-to-tree to keep on going no matter how much rust it has.
