I'd rather go with an FJ Cruiser at that price.

Looked at it yesterday, i thinking for myself its nice, but remember its for my dad, he wants his luxuiries, something the FJ doesnt have , also very plasicy in my opinion

He currently drivers a 2009 Lexus is250 and 2008 Merc C200k and now wants a decent 4x4 to go road tripping

The Fortuner isn't all that luxurious, imho. Very decent family SUV with proven offroad ability, seeing as it's based on the Hilux platform. Keeping that in mind, the ride is quite "bakkie"-ish. So if your dad doesn't mind driving a double-cab Hilux with an extra row of seats, no load-bay and leather seats, then by all means. It really is a very capable machine offroad, but don't expect the luxury you get from a Lexus, Merc or even Landy Disco...

I agree with the luxuries, but dont think the interior is that bad-it could be worse, least the interior is nicer then lets say the nissan hardbody. lol -

His main need is for it to be good off road witch we know it is, just wanted other good off road options for him

A mate of mine sold his Fortuner. He said:"The Hilux and the Fortuner are both vehicles targetted by hijackings and theft. They break in via the bonnet to disconnect the alarm. You do get a aftermarket fitting to prevent this kind of break in, but the damage will be done. The reasonf fot these vehicles being so popular, is because they use the same engines in the Toyota Quantum 10-seaters." He also said:"Santam has issued a statement that the insurance premiums and excesses will be increased until Toyota resolves these issues. I am selling mine and will look for another 4x4." He now drives a Nissan Nivara.

A Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon could be a good choice too, for serious offroading.

Thanks for that bit of info! will let him know -

The car offers alot of bang for buck, - in that price range there is not much other choices,

OH YES! It is absolutely brilliant offroad. On a recent 4x4 day a colleague of mine did the trail with his yellow Rubicon. Later on we dubbed it the "geel spinnekop", purely because the wheels were climbing over the obstacles like the legs of a spider! Wouldn't mind having one myself...

Yep, feels like half of the stolen vehicles we hear about through the neighbourhood watch are Fortuners and Hiluxes, criminals want them BADLY...

Only bad thing I have ever heard about them is that they are very popular with the hijackers. I guess all cars are nowadays :(

Other than that, my mate has one and its awesome!
