What's it with small families and their range of cars?
Where I stay every secomd house has a C200 and a damn gold Fortuner.

I hate it.

A mate of mine sold his Fortuner. He said:"The Hilux and the Fortuner are both vehicles targetted by hijackings and theft. They break in via the bonnet to disconnect the alarm. You do get a aftermarket fitting to prevent this kind of break in, but the damage will be done. The reasonf fot these vehicles being so popular, is because they use the same engines in the Toyota Quantum 10-seaters." He also said:"Santam has issued a statement that the insurance premiums and excesses will be increased until Toyota resolves these issues. I am selling mine and will look for another 4x4." He now drives a Nissan Nivara.

They said that when I bought my Hilux 8 years ago... didn't seem to do much to my premiums.

So the general consensus is - its a good car but high risk in terms of theft and hijacking!

Not much other choice in terms of price (well non my father likes)

The Fortuner 4x4 is a great vehicle, very capable off road and an excellent tow vehicle. There is currently a special of about R50k off the 4x4 Fortuner before the newer spec arrives sometime in September. Some Fortuner owners prefer the current model over the newer one.

There is a problem with the hijacking of Fortuners & Hiluxes up in Gauteng. Apparently the bonnet gets opened up with a crowbar and the alarm cable gets cut. You can do a DIY or toyota can put in something to prevent this for about R200. Check the 4x4community forum. Here in Cape Town we don't have this problem & I don't have a problem with insurance premiums, in fact I have a very reasonable premium on mine.

I have the 4x2 3.0D4D and wanted to upgrade to the 4x4 a few weeks ago. Due to personal reasons I couldnt get a better the interest rate and decided not to go for it.

i would still settle for a disco 3 with acceptable mileage... i once drove that thing through hannops 4x4 trail and it was the best vehicle to have around...
