Toyota is coming out with a more expensive and bigger hybrid-only model than its popular Prius - the Sai.

+1 on a smart car style hybrid

that said, i think there's a lot of misconceptions out there around fully electric cars being cheaper and less powerful. i guess the sai addresses the latter issue, but until economies of scale are reached, electric vehicles aren't going to be much cheaper than their internal combustion counterparts.

the cost of renting the battery, added to the energy cost also needs to be factored in, as well as the local environmental strategy for battery remanufacturing.
