Toyota pilots wireless charging for electric cars

What does more harm the the environment, diesel engines or the electric engines (considering batteries effect and also cause pollution via the power plants themselves)?

Diesel, considering that the factories that produce diesel cause pollution via power plants themselves

Interesting question.Wonder if anybody has some actual figures of pollution caused by each process.

Toyota are going to need to introduce a self parking option at the same time because half of South African drivers can't even get the tyres to fit between the lines let alone locate a vehicle over a 0.25 m2 charging pad.

Alternatively this could add the incentive to park more accurately/carefully. :D

Isn't this a bit stupid? If you have to park in a particular place, and something has to be raised up, why not make 2 contacts expose themselves and touch - could make it easier using guides, something like Scalextric cars? Less electricity wastage (wireless charging isn't as efficient as a plug), and a LOT cheaper to produce.

Because a mechanical contact based system has several disadvantages:
1. More mechanical wear and tear.
2. Arcing when contact is not properly maintained leading to burnt contacts or worse a fire started under your vehicle.
3. Requires weather proofing against the elements. Can't have high voltage contacts under water.
4. Requires safety mechanism against electrocution if high voltage is being used.

With an electromagnetic charging system all the electrics are sealed so it is safe, even if the charging circuit needs to operate at high voltages.
