Tracking down a stalker

A few weeks ago my fiancee started receiving strange calls from a guy she does not know. The calls are, of course, from a withheld number.
Unfortunately, it escalated to the point where he sent her a very explicit and disgusting sms. Fortunately, his IQ was made evident by the fact that he did not realise his cell number would be visible on the sms (for those of you who don't know, you can hide your number on outgoing calls, but you can't hide it on sms's and mms's etc)
So, I now have his number. I called him today and was pretty civil, but still I think I gave him the fright of his life. However, I would like to know whether I can get any further information about him just from his cell number. People who know me, know that I'm not about to take things very far at all (I'm more talk than anything else ), but I would REALLY like to have his name or the area he lives in etc, just so that next time we talk (my fiancee always hands the phone to me when he calls), I can give him a bigger scare, and therefore hopefully convince him that he's wading in too deep....

I would think the first place to start is by reporting him to the police - then take the case number to the network operator and demand they do something about it.

thanks for the reply. I know thats the proper way to do it, but truth be told, I'd rather just (at least for now) find out who it is first. If the operator blocked his number, for example, that wouldn't prevent him getting pissed off and exacting some kind of petty revenge. I know that may seem melodramatic, but I'd rather not take chances....

I agree with bwana. I have had similar incidents with please call me messages. Spoke to Vodacom, they sent the person a warning, with a reference number for myself to give to the police for a case of harassment

Keep in mind, they will not give you any personal information on the subscriber ...

Post the number. I'm sure that after receiving 1000's of "accidental" sms's, he will get the message

It''s also a good "promise" to give the caller should he not stop!

Everyone get a pre-pay SIM and send him 5 x "Call me" messages!

Seeing that you have his number and have had a 'civil' conversation with him, there should be no further reason for him to call your fiance.

He's either a nutter (report him to the police) or is 'genuinely' pursuing your woman (tell him in no uncertain terms to back off).

This happened to a girl friend of mine a couple of years ago. As bwana stated, we went to the police, got the case number, phoned Vodacom and they got the offenders details. Turns out it was a friend of her family member, which made it even sicker, he apologized and she dropped the case.

I'm a very nice guy. Some people just need to be taught a lesson. The police in this country is not very effective, so it's helpful to know how to deal with these kind of things yourself.

Who knows, an undesirable type may post much the same as the OP with the intention of hoodwinking folks here into unwittingly helping him with his stalking activities.

Can I please revive this thread. I have the problem of the person calls me and hangs up. I have his number. He doesnt even hide it. I have been to the police, contacted Vodacom which is my service provider and sent MTN an email stating my problem with his details and i asked them to please help me. I know it is an indian guy cause my son called him and he hung up. The police wont do anything, Vodacom says it's not their problem, MTN have not even bothered to respond. I have received a total of over 200 calls from this person in 4 days. I have to put my phone on silent at night cause it carried on until 6 or 7 am. It starts at around 7 pm. I cant change my number as it is a business number. I am so angry and scared at the same time. What can I do? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

My wife had the same problem with no solution,what I did was to switch off that sim card at night restrict private numbers{on Samsung U700) during the day for a month and he was gone.
But the trueth is ISPs alow this kind of harassment,first with 99cents a prepaid sim and withheld numbers.
