Hi guys

If I were to trade in a fully paid car, and it’s worth more than the car I’m trading in for, does this mean I’ll get the new car fully paid and then some?

Will dealer just pay the extra to me in cash?

It depends how much the dealer offers you for the car.

Dealers are usually not in the business of exchanging cars for no gain, they are mostly interested in trading up not down, so I doubt many will be interested, unless there is an opportunity to shortchange you and sell your car for a much bigger profit.

To get the best value, sell it privately, then go purchase a new car.

Dealers will give you much less than what it is worth.

Highly unlikely. You will most likely get an offer lower than what your car is worth, which will be lower than the new car.

Not always hey, I managed to get a decent trade in for my old Cruze when I bought the Triber, sure if I'd stuck it out I may have gotten R5k more but than I would've had to really stick it out.

They’d be unlikely to make the deal at all, or super low ball you.

Normally the sales person getting the commission on the new car sale is not the same one as the one needing to resell the traded in car and couldn’t care less.

I also suspect you might be a little confused about the different values related to your vehicle because you don’t actually have an offer on the table.
