Much like the thread title.
I traded in my vehicle for another vehicle, now the dealer is withholding my new vehicles licence/registration papers and is asking me to pay for the licence of the traded in vehicle.
The vehicle I traded in had a expired licence of about a year or so behind.

The dealer wants me to pay R1300 and some change for the licence on the traded in vehicle.
What do you guys think? My reasoning is that the dealer knew the licence was behind and needed to calculate that in his sums.

It's on you. Aarto is going to block your new license registration without you paying.

Yeah unless you and the dealer had a conversation around the old license and had agreed that it was behind and they would sort it out, I'd say it's on you.

Why didn't you pay it in the first place and what is your reasoning for not paying it now?

Bills. Plenty of bills.

I was under the impression that they would pay the licence renewal of the traded in vehicle.
I figured, while they are evaluating the car, they would calculate the licence renewal in as well.

Pay your bills. This license is just one of them. Don't shift blame to someone else, you know perfectly well paying this is your responsibility. FFS!
If I knew this was my responsibility then I wouldn't have asked a genuine question.
Who are you to judge? I never informed the dealer that I will not pay the licence renewal.
I am merely asking advice. Perhaps someone else has been in this situation.

I have seen plenty of posts where people sell vehicles and note that the licence is behind. So I genuinely do not know what the law or agreement is here.

I haven't....

Secondly: be truthful. You hoped that no one would notice initially and that the dealer would foot the bill. Otherwise you would have asked him about it during the evaluation.

We all have bills to pay, so that is not really an excuse is it? Asking here for "advice" is pointless...it's quite obvious that you have no choice but to pay and rightly so.

That's exactly what I did. I was in the middle of a divorce and pissed off at everything and miserable and thought, ****it, I'll take a chance. I got found out and I paid. I have since recovered from my emotional meltdown and I try and behave better now.

How was it ever going to not be your responsibility..?

If you wanted the dealer the pay for it, then you should have been upfront and explicit about it and told the dealer, the license is behind, deducted the license fees and penalty from the trade in sum you are giving me, to cover it..

Now it just seems like you were trying your luck, hoping the dealer would take the knock on your behalf...

So judgemental.

Here are three screenshots from a WA group:

It was a genuine question.
