Traffic between iBurst users

Hi All,

I reckon slim will be able to answer this best, but I posted it public as some people might benefit from it.

Some time ago it was possible to transfer data between iBurst users, at decent speeds, without being affected by the cap or adding to your bandwidth. Then after that, it came to light that it might have been stopped (can't remember the outcome of this).

My point is this: I normally use about 1.5Gb per month, leaving half my package to spare. If the above theory holds that we can transfer data between iBurst users without affecting our Bandwidth usage, I am willing to donate whatever I have not used, by taking in requests for downloads, and 'giving' it to whoever requested it.

Some info above might not be true or a bit warped, but I am sure you all understand what I am trying to say.

Any comments?

I think it's a very good idea, we rarely use all our bandwidth, and if iburst to iburst doesn't affect bandwidth, I would be willing to do the same. :D

The quasi-official reason given by WBS for stopping intra-iBurst traffic, is that it was overloading the network, specifically certain base-stations...the simple fact is that any P2P activity on WBS' throttled implementation of iBurst is an exercise in futility bcos WBS will kill your P2P even if you are on the 9GB "P2P" package...

OK ic.. it wasnt stopped first of all

Landy, you metnioned the following
If the above theory holds that we can transfer data between iBurst users without affecting our Bandwidth usage
that was never the case. The whole inter-iburst traffic thing was that traffic between iBurst users was NOT shaped, it always was counted with the bandwidth manager.

You see WBS shape at the gateway to the internet on the outside of the network and count data in the core of the network (probably at the switch), so inter-iburst traffic was counted as anything that goes in our out of that switch is counted (like the cache proxy they use is inter-iburst traffic and the bandwidth is counted)

It wasn't stopped it was temporarily plugged, its hard to tell if it was something they did purposfully or if it was due to network problems at the time but I can say that inter-iburst traffic still isnt shaped BUT it is now throttled. So if I am capped it will be 64kbit whereas before it was between 20 and 100KB/s depending on the amount of sources. But if you are on the 3GB package and can't use p2p and used soemthing that had only iBurst users you could use it and wouldn't be shaped.

I think its great though that you would be into helping other users with your unused bandwidth but it would be hard to find a legal application for the idea because most of the time inter-iburst traffic was just used for piracy/porn.
