Traffic shaping

I thought this wasn't legal any more, but telkom seems to be shaping out ordinary http and ftp traffic.

I just tried downloading the SUSE 10.1 mini-install disc (30 odd MB).

Tried every single mirror on the OpenSUSE page, both http and ftp - best download rate I got is around 10kbyte/s. This is on 4mbit ADSL.

So I had an idea, just a theory. Downloaded the ISO on our UK server (4Mbyte/s). then, scp it over here. Guess what? It's coming down at 114kbyte/s.....

I hate Telkom

I noticed that as well today, took 10 restarts of router to get a "decent" IP :(

Just use a download manager during the day for now. 5 threads/connections or more will bring your max line speed.

MrG,
ftp sites are where most Linux ISO files are held, you only get single thread off FTP.....
I was grabbing the 2 Debian DVDS last night at full speed locally....woke up this morning and they had dropped to 20KB/sec....dissapointing.

I dont think this has much to do with shaping. Reason being that shaping prioritizes http and ftp. Seems like its just a slow, congested path between you and the server you trying to download from. Try what MrG suggests

Beta, are you using jigdo for the Debian ISOs? I find if I jigdo them from saix, I get about 70% of the image at full line speed, and the last bit from cdimage comes at whatever Telkom feels like.

razer, I used wget (single thread) on the server, then scp to copy it from the server to my notebook.

No way, whereabout is the freedom toaster? I live very close to uct.

There following freedom toasters are in Cape Town:

* University of Cape Town (UCT)
On campus, the Cape Linux Users Group (CLUG) has adopted this toaster. More information about the toaster, its location on campus and what's on the toaster, can be found on the CLUG Web Site.

* Brakenfell Pick 'n Pay Hypermarket
This Freedom Toaster does not offer DVD support
Situated in Old Paarl Road, Brakenfell in the Northern Suburbs.

* Canal Walk
This Freedom Toaster does not offer DVD support
Situated at the MTN ScienCentre (this is where it all started).

The Freedom Toaster in Stellenbosch is situated in the JS Gericke Library
