Go to web.whatsapp.com on a desktop browser. Follow the very simple instructions to connect to your phone. Takes about a second. Then you have your WhatsApp on the PC. Just go to the image you want to save, click it to enlarge it and use the save function.

If plugging your phone into your PC and copying a picture off the device is convoluted, then maybe OP needs to learn basic PC skills first, which I doubt is the case.

It's useful. When on my computer , I don't even look at my phone anymore, the PC remembers your credentials, and all messages come on your PC. You can respond, download, upload all using your computerSounds more convoluted than plugging in a USB cable and going to a folder and doing copy and paste.
