Cape Town - Sulaiman Effendi, the son of killer Najwa Petersen, has been arrested for the lion cub that was found in Athlone.

Effendi, Shurud Jacobs and Moegamat Rayaan Simons on Wednesday made their first appearance at the Wynberg Magistrate's Court following their arrest on Tuesday.

It was also revealed that members from the Stock and Endangered Species Unit are now searching for a second lion cub, which was smuggled from Limpopo along with the first cub which was found at Effendi’s home in Lawrence Road, Athlone last Wednesday night.

Police said the estimated street value of the cub is R50 000.

Moments before stepping into the dock, Effendi dressed in a K-Way jacket, stood outside the court holding cells and burst into tears when he saw his friends and relatives who came to support him.

Magistrate Rhode informed the trio, aged between 28 and 30, that they were facing 14 charges relating to the protection of wild animals.

The suspects indicated they have private lawyers.

Last Wednesday, detectives attached to Organised Crime Investigations followed up on information about a lion cub and arrived at Jacobs’ home, who first took police to Simons’ residence and then to Effendi’s house where the lion cub was found....

Outside court, more drama unfolded when Najwa’s brother, Waleed Dirk, was filmed headbutting a photographer from Die Burger, Jaco Marais,

The brother of convicted killer Najwa Petersen has been fined R8 million for fraud and forgery committed for illegally exporting fruit and vegetables to Namibia.

Mogamad Waleed Dirk, 37, and his sister Fairuz Arendse, 49, entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the State yesterday and were convicted of 180 counts of fraud and forgery in the Cape Town Regional Court.

Real classy family.

You can sell drugs and guns in CPT no problem but if you take a selfie with a lion cub you have the whole of suburbia on your case.

Effendi dressed in a K-Way jacket. How is this relevant? Are these reporters paid R50 per word? He just made R300 bucks if that’s the case.

Why insert a k-way ad there?

Focus on the actual story about the animal smugglers.

According to the Daily Voice ...

The Daily Voice can also reveal that the male cub found at a house in Athlone on 22 August, was apparently brought in from Limpopo for a party of a two-year-old girl.

A source says the girl had recently seen The Lion King movie and fell in love with little Simba and Nala, the two main characters.

“The theme of the party was going to be The Lion King and her father wanted two cubs as a party trick, (probably) to impress people and to make his daughter happy,” says the source.

Leave it there for another three months and your daughter would be dinner.

Why lion cub found at Athlone house was euthanised

Cape Town – The four-month-old lion cub that was confiscated in Athlone earlier this year was euthanised the same day it arrived at CapeNature.
The conservation body said they were “faced with one of the hardest decisions to make in conservation as a result of the illegal behaviour of three local men”, when they supported and sanctioned the euthanisation by a professional veterinarian in August.
CapeNature spokesperson Loren Pavitt said the cub was euthanised “later that (same) day after protocol was followed”.
The cub, with an estimated street value of R50 000, was found in Athlone on August 21 after police had followed-up leads when photos of the cub went viral on social media.
Pavitt said they had euthanised the cub “in line with international best practice guidelines” and stood by their decision.

“Options to rehabilitate the animal for release back into the wild or place it into an acceptable institution where it would receive the appropriate level of care were all carefully considered, but were found to not be viable or in line with sound conservation principles.
“In this case, it was clear that the cub was treated as a pet and habituated to humans and would be impossible to rehabilitate to a healthy natural behavioural state.
"Although there are facilities for keeping lions in captivity, there are no rehabilitation facilities in South Africa,” said Pavitt.

CapeNature said there were no successful cases of lions rehabilitated and successfully released into the wild.
“This was supported by the National Parliamentary colloquium on captive lion breeding and hunting in South Africa, which supports this and recommends no more lions find their way into permanent captivity.”
Pavitt said they too were saddened by the decision.

“It must be stressed that CapeNature did not take this decision lightly, and shares the public’s sadness that this was even necessary.”
Pavitt said they had received offers from various organisations to place the cub in captivity, however “existing facilities where lions can be kept operate as commercial ventures where animals are displayed to the public for an admission fee”.
Sulaiman Effendi, Moegamat Rayaan Simons and Shurud Jacobs are currently out on R5 000 bail each and face 14 charges relating to the protection of wild animals.

Killing a vulnerable species is an excellent conservation principle.

I don't get the rush to put this animal down.

Cape Nature's own ordinance says -

81. Disposal of articles confiscated or forfeited under ordinance.—Whenever any article, animal or thing has been confiscated or forfeited to the Board under any provision of this ordinance—

the owner thereof may, within three months from the date of such confiscation or forfeiture or, where proceedings in a Superior Court involving such confiscation or forfeiture have been instituted within such period, within three months after judgement in such proceedings, as the case may be, apply to the Board for the return of such article, animal or thing,

How do you leave open the option of return when you kill the animal on day 1.

CapeNature charged for putting down Athlone lion cub 'without consultation'

A case has been opened against CapeNature by a police unit over an alleged lack of consultation after it emerged it had hastily euthanised a lion cub rescued from an Athlone home.
