At least 12 people have died in Tunis after a bus carrying presidential guards was hit by an explosion, an interior ministry spokesman said.

The bomb exploded shortly before 5pm on avenue Mohamed V, near an illuminated clock tower named 7 November, a city landmark.

One eyewitness said the target was parked on the street close to avenue Habib Bourguiba, where the heavily guarded interior ministry and French embassy are based.

The interior ministry said 16 people were wounded.
The area was cordoned off by police and emergency vehicles. The bombing, the first in the Tunisian capital this year, comes as the country is on high alert against attacks by Islamic State.

Tunisia declares state of emergency after attack

PRETORIA – A suicide bomber has killed 12 presidential guards in downtown Tunis.

The government has declared a state of emergency to deal with this third serious terrorist attack this past year.

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi calls the bombing a painful event and as great tragedy, vowing his government will win its war against terrorism.

The explosion took place on a tree-line avenue in the heart of the Tunisian capital.

The bomber detonated his belt aboard a bus carrying presidential guards to the palace on the outskirts of town.

Seventeen people were injured.

Attacks outside a downtown museum in March and at the beach resort Souse last June have killed 60 people and brought Tunisia's vital tourism industry to its knees.
