He gave the greenlight?

I think you're mistaken. He had no choice but to pull out. He never gave Turkey the greenlight. You must be one of the most dishonest people on this forum /facepalm

Trump didn't greenlight this, Putin did. Trump just obeys. Captain Sweden should know better

Sanctions over an attack he greenlit? Comical.

Does this guy sounds like he listens to the US for advice?

Turkey will not back down from its military operation in Syria, regardless of what anyone may say, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Monday.
Speaking at a summit of the Turkic Council in Azerbaijan, Erdoğan criticized the EU and Arab League for condemning Turkey's intervention against YPG terrorists, saying: "Since when has a terror group been defended against a NATO member? Have these terror groups been given NATO membership?"
"We are determined to continue the operation until the end, without paying attention to threats. We will absolutely finish the job we started. Our battle will continue until ultimate victory is achieved," he added.

I think Erdogan is using this as an excuse to return Syrian refugees to Aleppo.

How is Turkey a winner.
They look fcked from where I'm standing.

Turkey became winners the moment that the Kurds called on Syrian government protection. The Kurds immediately lost their autonomy in NE Syria and now fall under Syrian government control. If that is not a win then what is? It is exactly what Turkey wanted. In fact it is even superior to their original intentions.

Reunion with Syria is the best option for them.

Exactly. In fact it was the only option for the Kurds once Turkey invaded and pushed them into the only option the Kurds had. Plays straight into the hands of Turkey. Turkey must be thrilled at how quickly it happened.

I don't know how it benefits Turkey. They would have found it easier to exterminate the Kurds if they didn't unite with Syria.

And the Syrian army and the Kurds are war hardened it won't be a smart move by Turkey to persue further war, they have more too lose.

It plays into the hands of Syria and the Kurds. If they can work out some kind of understanding.

Except now instead of just Kurds - we have the Syrian, Russian and possibly Iranian forces headed to that region to fight the Turks.
Cant be good and US and Brit forces know this that why they pulled out.

Not at all. The Kurds are the biggest losers. They had an autonomous region for almost 5 years which they had been seeking for more than a century. Through the desperate agreement made with the government, Syrian government forces now command the Kurds. The Kurds have lost their autonomy.

Turkey no longer needs a peace corridor now that the region falls under Syrian government control.

The Syrians will prevent the YPG from arming and collaborating with the PKK. Solved. Better than any peace corridor they hoped for. Syrian kurds are thereby neutralised as a threat to Turkey. Now they can focus on the Kurdish PKK within Turkey.

Both Turkey and Syria are Russian allies. The Kurds are not. Russia will oversee a ceasefire and agreement that suits both its allies - Turkey and Syria.

Turkey has a safer border now and the YKK in Turkey is cut off from Syrian-Kurdish support.

The problem of refugees will be sorted out with Russia and its two allies.

Job done.

Turkish and Syrian troops are within line of sight. There has been no exchange of fire between the two. There is no need. Both are Russian allies. I think I answered most above already.

You are completely ignoring the relationship between those countries. Russia will not attack Turkey. They are allies. They are all allies of Russia. Russia will cut a deal that makes all parties happy, except the Kurds and Israel.

Russia and Turkey are not big friends.

However, both countries still stand on opposite ends when it comes to foreign policy, especially in tense issues such as the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Syrian Civil War, the Kosovo conflict and have opposing views on the Armenian genocide. Relations were tense following the Russian fighter jet shootdown in November 2015 to get normalised again in 2017.

Putin and Erdogan are tight irrespective of what you read.

‘Spoiler': Turkey’s Erdoğan positioned to be Putin ally in NATO
by Joel Gehrke

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could help Russia in multiple ways if he continues to undermine the effectiveness of NATO from within the transatlantic alliance, according to diplomats and analysts.
“He will continue to play a spoiler role within NATO,” Aykan Erdemir, a former Turkish lawmaker at the Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told the Washington Examiner. “That makes him extremely useful to Russia.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin has cultivated a relationship with Erdoğan in recent years, taking advantage of the Turkish leader’s frustration with the U.S. strategy to defeat the Islamic State in Syria by partnering with Kurdish militias that he regards as a terrorist threat. Now Erdoğan seems willing to help Putin in multiple theaters, not only by attacking U.S. partners in Syria but by welcoming two members of the Russian-dominated legislature in Crimea to Istanbul on Sunday.

Russia only cares about its gas lines running through Turkey. If Erdogan is killing Assads forces and asks Russia for help what do you think Putin will do?

Russian President Vladimir Putin didn't openly condemn Turkey's Operation Peace Spring in the northeast of Syria — but it is clear he is hardly happy about the offensive. According to a Kremlin statement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke on the phone to Putin just before Turkey launched the offensive. Putin apparently "called on his Turkish partners to weigh its action with care, so as not to damage common efforts to regulate the Syrian crisis."

Putin is a master puppeteer. He plays these games at a level nobody is willing or able to match. Cannot trust him while looking at him.

Three weeks ago. Putin, Erdogan, Rouhani meet at the trilateral summit for settlement on Syria.

PS. The Kurds were not invited.
