And you are a know-it-all who spreads BS. I dont care about the past. Now, there is fckall that owning a radio has to do with having a TV license. Simple. Listening to or having a radio by no means at all requires you to own a tv licence. Whether tv licence finances radio stations or not.
Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
  • This famous statement has produced many paraphrasesand variants:
    • Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
    • Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes.
    • Those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it.
    • Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them.
    • Those who do not know history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them.

“You must make it compulsory – that is the important thing,” Sherrif said. “I think the government should make it its duty to find a way to get South Africans to commit to paying a TV licence.”
You can FRO!!!

“Now, you all know what it costs to run the SABC. Even if the SABC took all that advertising, they will still not be able to afford to meet the mandate they are given.”
Cancel the SABC's man date and problem solved.

Read this slowly, then tell us why we should pay to repeat the past.

Here is a fairly good summary of what is happening in the World, notably, however, excluding Africa.
( I wonder why that is?)

Public broadcasting - Wikipedia

Read that before making all sorts of "claims" about what is happening in other countries.

And then for those that do care about the past maybe check on what happened to broadcasting in South Africa before the SABC was formed.

History has valuable lessons for those that want to bother to learn from history.

Read your Wikipedia link, then tell us how SABC compares to that.

‘Public’ should not be ‘State owned and controlled’

If that is the case, things are different.

Sure, go ahead and make a suitable submission to that effect. It is an option.
Just like the OP article that triggered this thread, you are free to add your proposal to the mix of suggestions about what should happen to "public broadcasting" in SA.

I don't have to read it. I know the history of broadcasting just about everywhere already, even more than what is posted in that link.
I know where the SABC fits in that list.
I am up to date regarding the past and the developments.

TV Licence fees must become compulsory in South Africa - eMedia CEO

TV licence fees should be compulsory for every South African household and the SABC must be supported by the government, according to eMedia Holdings CEO Khalik Sherrif.

Sherrif was speaking at a recent parliamentary committee meeting regarding the revision of broadcasting regulations and their potential effects on the SABC, which is facing a financial crisis and a controversial retrenchment process.
ANC Tax is mandatorium

At R0.73/day the TV license is actually a steal. Excuse the pun. While I don't watch SABC I listen to the traffic report and the news on 5FM. Worth it for me. Adding it to my municipal bill would make my life even easier.
I don't watch SABC TV nor do I listen to any SABC radio stations, I am not prepared to pay for something I don't use, especially when it funds ANC corruption and propaganda (besides that I assume it is shite content anyway).

If one had a good look at when the SABC's TV Licence fee collections started nosediving, I would bet that it was when people realised that Hlaudi and his gang of thieves were running the SABC into the ground with the backing of the ANC.

Those that find the SABC useful in some unimaginable way should pay their R0.73 per day, just don't expect everyone to share that sentiment @Geoff.D.

The ANC created these problems, and if the ANC wants to keep the SABC alive, the ANC should force their own members to pay their TV Licence fees.

You are free to do as you wish. Just as some of us are free to obey the law if we so wish.

And, we only have your word that you "never" listen to SABC radio stations or watch any SABC TV.

You are also free to believe that all the content is "shite". Presumably, you have watched or listened at some stage to make that judgement call?

Just remember, that when the next general election takes place you are not going to "watch" or "listen to" ANY local news either. And, next time the squirrel makes an announcement about Covid 19, you are not allowed to listen to that either. If you do, even if it appears on eNCA or any other station remember who runs the equipment and studios that broadcast it.

Just because "we" can't relate to some content does not make that content "Shite" either.

BTW, just about all the content generated in the entire World is "shite". Less than 10% of the content generated on a daily basis is worth anything.

Thanks so much for allowing me to do as I wish, I really appreciate it, I condescendingly allow you to do exactly the same and if you already haven't done so, consider becoming an ANC member but make sure you pay your TV Licence and get all the other ANC members to do the same.

The very reason that I stopped watching SABC TV and listening to SABC radio stations is that the SABC spewed out ANC propaganda.

A very long time ago I used to listen to 5FM before it got turned into a Kwaito station and all the DJs I liked were forced to leave.

If there's anything I need to watch (including "squirrel" as you call him), I do it online, ever heard of YouTube?

“Licence fees are compulsory in many parts of Europe, and we must try to make that compulsory here,” Sherrif said.
Just for reference RSA is in Africa and not Europe.

And "youtube" gets it from where?
Absolutely and utterly irrelevant. If someone watches the news and tells me about it, do I need a TV licence. If they video it, and whatsapp the cellphone video to me, do I need a TV licence. You are clutching at straws.
