Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson announced in a message to all employees that 11% of its workforce would be laid off, stating that they made the layoffs through an "Anti-Racist" and "Anti-Oppression" lens.

The San Francisco-based corporate communications company CEO said in the message to employees that the layoffs are "wise and necessary."

"I'm not going to sugarcoat things. A layoff is the last thing we want to do, but I believe it's wise and necessary. Twilio has grown at an astonishing rate over the past couple years. It was too fast, and without enough focus on our most important company priorities. I take responsibility for those decisions, as well as the difficult decision to do this layoff," Lawson said.

In determining which roles would be impacted in the layoffs, Lawson said that company officials examined which roles were most aligned with its four priorities, but said that the layoffs were carried out through an anti-racism lens.

Thankfully I do not use Twilio and now likely never will. Nonetheless, good luck to them and their short future. Appointments based on colour of skin never ends well.

In the past year, Twilio shares have declined in value by over 78%.

This is probably the best thing that could have happened to Twilio, maybe a bigger decline will be even better. They should realize that they cannot depend on investors and should rather close down shop if they need money. There isn't really a place in capitalism for racist companies.

Okay so, has all the people fired been placed in a row so you can look at them? Cause I read anti-racist as they will be firing people regardless of skin colour.

So unless every single person fired is white, this is some more fox baiting and nothing more.

"Anti-racism" is a political ideology. It's about countering systemic racism and oppression of particular racial groups. I'm sure you get the idea of what the ideology is about from that brief description. It's just more racism.

If that's the ideology being referred to here (and the language sounds very much like it is) It's very likely most of the folks fired here were fired based on race.

Probably....

Most likely he laid of a proportional amount of black and white people.

This statement distract from the fact that 11% of their workforce is now unemployed.

Those who were laid-off will get "at least" 12 weeks of pay, and an additional week per year of service at the company. They will also receive the full value of Twilio's next stock vest.
At least 3 months of pay, as well as a bonus? I can't really fault them there.
