Twitter begins firing staff after Musk takeover

The emails started arriving in Twitter Inc. employees’ personal inboxes in the early morning hours Friday: “Today is your last working day at the company,” the message read.

As people frantically refreshed their work and personal accounts to learn their fate, new owner Elon Musk sought to defend his decision to terminate thousands of jobs.

I'm sure that distinction makes people feel so much better about losing their jobs...
Differance is sudden loss of income with no time, according to the letters posted, they are sent home with full pay until February.

Apparently there is substantial bloat in the company, jokes about x number managers than actual operational staff.

As CEO he would actually NOT be doing his job if it wasn't tackled.

That is not retrenchment. That is fired with grace. They got what the law requires and a bit extra. Retrenchment they would have received a severance package. Also, retrenchment has a specific process.

They have been fired gracefully.

There is a follow up to the letter on a individual basis from what it says. The general action is what was stated. Ever had a disgruntled employee left with access to systems still? It's not worth it, pay the notice and let it go.

Agree, better to just fire them and let them sit at home while following through with the process.

I cannot comment on how America does a 189 but full pay and three months with personal follow up is not unreasonable.

I wonder how he's making these decisions without going through any sort of review of the company. He seems to have a number in place and will then see if the numbers work for the company after he's done. They don't even have an executive team.

They probably have it from the due diligence in the purchase.

Perhaps, but due diligence doesn't provide the low level detail you'd need to know how let go and who to retain. You may know staff costs as an overall number, but to really pick you need more info.

This is part of the reason why I cringe on LinkedIn when people write essays about their new job and/or promotion. Having a job does not imply security. When companies need to cut costs or downsize, they will obviously get rid of staff. Hopefully the employees at Twitter are prepared and have contingency plans in place. I don't think there is much wrong with Elon trying to reduce the headcount; he overpaid for Twitter, and has to make his purchase a profitable one.

Elon Musk is definitely an interesting character. Interested to see what Twitter evolves to, under his leadership. He does strike me as a center-right wing individual (I am more liberal :)). I am sure the conservatives and far-rights are rejoicing, now that Twitter is under new leadership.
