Twitter on recruitment drive after big job cuts

Twitter Inc. is hiring, according to slides from a company talk tweeted by owner Elon Musk, following sweeping job reductions in a cost-cutting drive since the billionaire took over the social network.

The first slide had the words “We’re recruiting” with no further details.

New user signups are at an all-time high, averaging over 2 million a day for the seven days to Nov. 16, the slides also showed.

In a follow-up tweet, Musk said he sees a path to Twitter having more than 1 billion monthly users in 12 to 18 months.
And what percentage of those "new user signups" will turn out to be mostly bots?

I'm guessing upwards of 90%.

Musk has said Twitter will relaunch its paid Verified services Friday, after a series of delays and mishaps over fake accounts. Twitter Verified is his attempt to distinguish between different classes of users, and increase revenue.
So Musk's idea is to make everyone pay for a verified tick or be assumed to be fake?

What Twitter needs now is a script to create a slew of fake accounts mimicking existing accounts that have not yet paid for the verified tick, in the hopes that the real people will fork out money for the verified tick.

Anyone see the BBC interview with Melissa Ingles about being dumped by Twitter? She/He/They/Them Whatever was bemoaning the fact that She/He/They/Them Whatever lives in the most expensive city in the USA and now has to look for a job.

why is twitter hiring? i thought it was working better than ever after electric jesus fired everyone. shouldn't he fire more employees if he wants it to work even more better?

It's an old HR concept no longer seen in South Africa which has the most protective labour legislation in the world which results in sheltered employment and reluctance of employers to hire permanent employees resulting in mass unemployment.

When you want to change the corporate identity of a company, you fire everyone you can except for the most essential that have institutional knowledge. You then hire old and new employees that will support your corporate vision and identity.

And if your resume' landed in front of a proper HR manager with no capitalisation and grammar such as more better as in your post, you would find it in the bin. Mediocrity and laziness in SA are seen as excellence.

clearly you must be in management, because you immediately thought i was an idiot for using "more better" without explaining that it was a joke.

and i also see you're intolerant of people who pick their own pronouns, because it so greatly affects your life. i wouldn't be surprised to find out that you run your own company and you're paying people the absolute minimum and you resent the fact that south africa has such strong protections for employees and that company owners -- who make the big bucks -- deserve more protections from these unscrupulous low income earners who just latch onto a company's bank accounts and want to suck them dry.

Not surprising that they are recruiting. There was the initial layoffs and then the mass resignation/walkout. The second is unprotected and they will hire where they see deficiencies and on advice of the newer team.

clearly you must be in management,

I am.

you immediately thought i was an idiot for using "more better" without explaining that it was a joke.

Jokes are funny. No capitalisation and bad grammar are not. They indicate laziness and a weak attempt at humour.

and i also see you're intolerant of people who pick their own pronouns,

I am. It shows they have no regard for established rules.

i wouldn't be surprised to find out that you run your own company

I do.

you're paying people the absolute minimum

Nope, I paid them what they were worth to me.

you resent the fact that south africa has such strong protections for employees and that company owners -- who make the big bucks -- deserve more protections from these unscrupulous low income earners who just latch onto a company's bank accounts and want to suck them dry.

The exact reason I got rid of all employees when Covid came around. I couldn't fire the useless before that. I made it the overprotective government's problem and they had to pay the UIF contributions I paid in. It was worth every cent.

I now only contract labour to work for me. They are paid an agreed amount per job and only upon completion or at agreed stages do they receive payment. Amazingly, the work is completed quicker than my permanent employees could ever complete the work.

And the bonus on top is I don't have to dish out interest free advances for matric dances, car breakdowns, school clothes and home repairs. Additionally, I no longer need to deal with employees approaching me at 23:00 on a Saturday night seeking help for a drunken brawl. Nor do I have to fetch their relatives 100 km away at my own cost due to their skedonk breaking down on a Sunday afternoon and tow it home.

My contractors now supply their own tools and mine are not broken for my own cost. If they do not have tools they can hire mine with a refundable replacement deposit which is agreed upon at the contractual stage. I no longer loan tools out for free for home use and then have to suffer the broken angle grinder for my cost that never comes back with a new disc as I provided and additionally don't have to drive the employee to a hospital on a weekend and wait for him because he didn't bother with the protective glasses and gloves I provided with the angle grinder and got a splinter in the eye. I also don't need to give him paid sick leave for his own negligence.

I no longer have to explain the legal aspects of fraud when employees want me to give false pay sheets of lower amounts so that they can get government subsidies for their municipal rates on the house my tax provided for them. Or when they want me to give false pay sheets with higher amounts so that they can qualify for a loan they can't pay back.

No longer do I need to deal with the Department of Labour due to militant employees trying to get their way by intimidation and wasting my time and no longer do I have to deal with the police due to employees that are fired for termination offences laying false charges of racism at the police station.

The SA government created this situation due to misguided protectionist policies and legislation. Now they can stew in it.

So emotional....so disconnected from reality.

that company owners -- who make the big bucks

Sure dream on...SME's in SA have been struggling for decades. You barely make a living wage and have zero job security.

When the company tries to recruit you after the CEO was saying they may be bankrupt next year. That’s going to add a premium to the salary requests.

With job situation as it is right now anywhere in the world, do you reckon employees will be able to "demand" salary and to twitter under Musk's rule? Maybe some handful of talent would demand and get it but most would be happy to have any job.

Yes and no, its a good opportunity for those that want it and if you are well skilled and wanted, there is no stigma to working for a company and it goes bang, nothing to do with you.

There’s two types of employees. Those who have other options, and those who don’t. Presumably Musk just got rid of people he found useless, so he must now be looking for people who are useful. Such people will be able to negotiate.

Oh sure, but if you’re being headhunted, you’re not likely to switch to a company with an uncertain future unless the pay premium is worth it, or there’s some other perk that makes it worthwhile for you.

I assume that Twitter is targeting high performers here. If not, they should have just kept the staff they had.

People who cannot decide that they are a man, despite being one for their entire lives shouldn't be making any meaningful decisions for other people.
