Elon Musk wants Twitter to charge $20 for verification badges

One of Elon Musk's first demands from Twitter staff shortly after buying out the company is to launch paid-for verification badges, The Verge reports.

The publication has seen internal correspondence which requires employees to change the social media platform's optional Twitter Blue subscription to account verification.

$20 per month. Not sure if this is a good idea and what you will get in return. Not my cup of tea.

Trump will happily pay, as will many celebs and others.
at least it will cut down on the amount of scammers and impersonators.

Wasn't affected by Twitter Blue before, not affected by it now.
Okes silly enough to pay for it, be my guest.

Hence the reason I am saying. At $20 per month, there should at least be some advantage other than a blue verified badge. Unless, of course, if one misses the real purpose of the Twitter platform.

I don't know what Twitter wants to achieve with $20/pm sub. It is in my view excessive, or perhaps, but who knows, perhaps Americans want to show that they are backed by the Greenback.

I wouldn’t pay that, nor would the business. What is the value adding? I guess time will tell… Not long until it is announced that the sub can be paid with crypto, giving a special mention to one in particular. There is a reason Doge has pumped over 100%.

It's likely that businesses will pay if they alot of customer support on the app (thinking of cellphone companies) or they use their own account for advertising purposes.

I think a lot of people's ego is attached to the blue check. (Personal profiles) I saw a blue check complain about it, but if you don't want to pay for it, then drop the blue check. It would make no difference. Guarantee, the people complaining about it will pay it.

Musk probably knows this and why he's pushing for 20 USD.

he will pay for anything that gives him a Megaphone, Trump is on the waiting list no doubt.
Doubt he's on a waiting list. He may be lying but so far it seems he's not going to be jumping to come back.
One other slight possibility exists: Trump could be unbanned but stay away. In April, he promised that he’d stick with this own social-media platform, Truth Social. “I am not going on Twitter. I am going to stay on Truth,” he said on Fox News. Under his agreement with Truth, he “is generally obligated to make any social media post on Truth Social and may not make the same post on another social media site for 6 hours.”

Trump is there 100% , dude loves attention, and what better way to get that attention than by jumping on to a platform many read.

Don't you think that would basically apply to any person who wants to be heard, wants to market a website or product or service? Or are there some people or businesses who would rather make use of a platform with no clients to market on?

That 'blue-check' also comes with value add. In time Twitter's paid subscription will start to absorb that which is most used by their non-paid subscribers. This is a monetisation model.

You have something to sell, whether it is a product or opinion, on social media, they will make you pay in time.

Agreed, if you have a blue check at the moment, chances are, you're a company (20 USD is nothing) or you're an artist/celebrity or journalist, all of those using the platform for business purposes, one way or another.

I might have omitted non-profits if I were him.

Slightly off-topic, I want a MyBB Blue Check. Willing to pay R 300 pm with the ability to ban other users.
Looking at @epah and his Phillips Airfryer™ cult church :whistling:

I am surprised that people are trashing his view, since those same critics don't have blue checks themselves. I do wonder though, will Musk address the bot problem, or will he embrace the bot problem?

Twitter is such an odd place; it is very hard to gauge engagement. The metrics are skewed too. I won’t be surprised that their most active users likely have one or more alt accounts. Though that is not botting, people use it to promote their own anonymity to participate in things that their character otherwise won't do in public or to provoke discourse.

I doubt King will leave Twitter, he probably has an alt too.
