Who are they going to shoot at on the surface? The warship about to blow the submarine out of the water?

Modern submarines and Das Boot are generations apart.

Spoke to a former South African submariner I know. The Daphne Class carried small arms but nobody had a personal firearm on board. According to him the small arms carried inboard were:

1 x FN MAG Machine Gun (Bridge had mountings and to be used against small craft or fire support during close in shore operations on the surface. Never used in action)

1 x R1 rifle ( 7.62 FN FAL for line throwing or accurate fire and as a shark sentry rifle on the bridge when swimming for the crew was allowed. Only ever fired for line throwing)

2 x Uzzi SMGs (One issued to the sentry on the casing in harbour and carried on a sling around the shoulder. He had specific rules of engagement and was authorised to open fire under those rules without waiting for higher authority. No incident of opening fire ever took place)

5 x Star 9mm pistols (One issued to the Officer of the Day in harbour and carried on his hip in a holster. He was usually below decks and authorised under specific rules of engagement to open fire without orders from higher authority. No incident ever occurred)

2 x bayonets (Never used in any incident)

No personal firearms were carried by anyone other than the issued firearms in harbour. None were carried by personnel at sea and were kept in their stowages.

When required for specific operations where Special Forces would be landed there were designated stowage for:

RPG 7 Rocket launchers and rockets
PPSH Machine guns
Silenced weapons
SMG's
Hand grenades
AK 47 Rifles
So we have both learnt something.
Das good.
