Tyre Shops sending undamaged tyres for recycling without asking customer?

Hi guys. I had a massive puncture on my back tyre Friday on my way home. Long story short, managed to get the car to Minty's Jan Smuts on Saturday and after sitting there for about 2 hours, I drove out with two new tyres fitted to the front and the old front tyres moved to the back. I only clicked now that I never got my old undamaged back tyre back.

I phoned them now and the guy said ... sowweeee...already sent to recycling plant. This is a god damn fcking undamaged Michelin tyre that they sent to a recycling plant without my permission. Now he tells me that there is a sign up that apparently says all old tyres will be kept by them unless expressly asked by the customer to be returned to them. I told him I never saw this sign (only sign I saw was that customers not allowed in balancing bay). Why did the sales person not ask me what they must do with the old tyre? It would have taken him 5 seconds to do so. He then tells me there is a law that says they are forbidden to ask customers this? Is this sh*t for real?????

I told him I want my tyre BACK!!!!! He said the best he can do is when he gets another tyre (most likely from another customer that does not realize they need to expressly ask for their old tyre back) then he will contact me.

Is this really normal practice?

I realize that I should have perhaps had the sense to ask for it back, but it did not even cross my mind :(

WHAT THE HELL!!!

I always thought that your old tyres were used to get you a discount on your new tyres? Although you never see this on your statement. . .

No...it has no discount for the new tyres that I bought from them. If it did, then I would not be having a sh*t fit right now.

Yea...somewhat like batteries, a small rebate is "offered" towards your old tyres.
However I have taken up Minty's Midrand before to their H/O and the Director was quick to come back to me - they pro-active. Maybe he can help you.
I got H/O info via Google...

As far as I am aware they get money from the recycling plant for old tyres.

Send a friend there to look for a cheap second hand tyre in your size and it may appear from the backroom aka recycling plant

They usually state in their conditions (on the invoice or on a sign in the shop) that old tyres are the property of the shop. They do indirectly give you a discount as the old tyres are recycled, for which they get some money, then they don't have to suck that money from you.

BTW don't you drive something like a Corsa? Why put super-expensive Michelin tyres on that? Do much cornering at 300km/h?

School fees, I'd say.

The vast majority of people who have tyres replaced wouldn't want, and wouldn't ask for, the old ones back. How much tread was left?

In my experience it's been standard practise for them to keep the removed tyres unless I specifically asked to keep them. No cost implications.

At TWT it was on the invoice as "scrapped casing" at no charge last time I had a tyre replaced.

They then bulk sell these on to a third party who sorts them into usable second hand ones and recyclable ones.

When I had sidewall damage on one tyre when my car was new, I put the spare tyre on the rim to replace the damaged tyre as i could not get the same brand. They gave me a 50% tread used conti to replace the spare for a tip to the fitment guy. It had come off someone else's car earlier that day when they had replaced all 4.

Well chances are 99% it's not a Ferrari or a Brabus Rocket. If you've got any normal car like us mortals, you're wasting money on those overpriced tyres.

The car came with them on. The new tyres I had fitted is not Michelin. The fact is I am now short a expensive tyre which was not their property to do with as they please without verbally inform me. Or so is my feelings about the matter. :(

Enough tread for a few more years usage I would say. :(

If I had the tyres replaced due to them not having enough tread left, then fine, but I had the replaced due to damage to the one tyre so the other one was till fine. If the tread was the issue then I would not have minded them recycling the tyre (after asking me!)

I had the same. Kept the extra tyre as a spare for the spare.

I normally tell them I don't want the old tyres back. Just take up space. But I do understand where you're coming from though.
