Ubuntu 9.10

I am using ubuntu 9.04 and am wondering if upgrading to ubuntu 9.10 is really worth the effort. I don't want to break stuff thats already works...

Last night I installed Ubuntu for the first time ever.
I can't say the installation was that easy. (I am tri-booting Vista, Win 7 RC, Ubuntu 9.10)
I got confused at the part where you should choose the partition. I still don't have a clue on which partition it is loaded.

But it works. Very fast and I like it.
I'm still not sure what I will use it for except for the browsing, emailing, Office documents etc.

Is there a Alt.Binz for Linux?

This may be true for the majority of people with generic sound cards. I had issues with my multitrack interface after installing Karmic. But found a fix though at https://bugs.launchpad.net/pulseaudio/+bug/447092 - maybe this helps people having issues with 10in/10out recording interfaces.

9.10 is awesome. No problems and its just slicker. Ubuntu just works beter. More mature.

Cannot wait for 10.04 as I will be locking my wifes distro to that release. For many basic end users its all that they need.

Oh, when in doubt, try it on Virtualbox first.

By and large 9.10 is a big improvement on 9.04. However, somethings did break with whatever was upgraded. I've had the most problems with printers.

mine connects automatically on start up. Make sure "connect automatically" is ticked.

try the 9.10 Live Cd and see if all works--like others here have said, 9.10 is a big improvement from previous releases. if things get broken, then stick with 9.04. if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? .then wait for 10.4 in the next couple of months to reassess.

When I go to Places >> Computer >> it shows a CD/DVD icon but it seems no drivers are loaded for my device. How do I update or load the driver?

Look for Brasero. You will find it under video/audio in your menu. Or, you can download K3B from Add/Remove in your software centre.

I am not sure if you need a driver for your CD/DVD-ROM drive--the linux kernel should recognize this automatically as a device.

As suggested above, the default CD/DVD burner application in Ubuntu (GNOME) is Brasero--it is quite good and uses very little system resources. K3B is a KDE application, so when you decide to install this through the repo's, synaptic will pull all the KDE dependencies along with it. If you are happy to do this, then K3B is a better application (does MD5SUM check automatically on the ISOs you download.) So it is your choice which to go with.

Try Brasero and see if it does what you want it to do; if not then go for K3B.

Oh. It totally forgot to report back.

Brasero worked perfect. I even find that it writes discs faster than my Windows apps.

I know the speed is determined by the drive itself but the start-up and end processes was a lot quicker than it usually is in Windows.
For example: When I write a DVD with about 4Gb of data and the writing process is complete, It takes another 10 minutes to verify the data and then when that is finished you have to wait 2 or 3 minutes before the disc ejects and everything is finished. In Ubuntu the verification was much quicker(about 3 minutes) and after verification the disc popped out almost immediately.

Hope it makes sense.

yes, that is true with Brasero. BTW, did you check what RAM usage was? that is another boon with *nix OSs. Just thebest when it comes to tasks that have to do with file management. E.g. try copy and paste a large folder in windows vs. ubuntu--you will see a major difference.
