Ubuntu looks at speedier releases

I only use the LTS versions anyway. This 6 month cycle seems to work well. The only gripe I have is that things like Firefox aren't updated to newer versions in the standard ubuntu repositories.

Sure you can grab it from the mozillateam repository but it would be easier for new users if Canonical would put the updates into the standard repositories. Then again do we really want to encourage lazy users that can't use Google... meh I don't know.

I can guarantee you this is a marketing ploy, at the cost of reliably!

Agreed. It sounds that even if you decide to upgrade only every 3 months you'll still be using a release not tested as well as with the current release methods.

Good points. I agree.

Though even now I won't touch one of these 6 month releases until it has been out for at least 2 weeks or so just in case it has some crippling issue. I let those that want the bleeding edge instantly mess with it while I sit back and watch them squeal about bugs like the compiz cube appearing and turning purple while polka music plays in the background whenever they press the '5' key on the numpad.

What are they updating all the time? Software should be updated by their own vendors. So that only leaves the OS itself to Ubuntu, so again what are they updating all the time? Do they have some sort of specific goal other than of course to try become a good and popular OS like any OS would want to be?

As in do they intend being a multimedia platform?
A server or hosting platform?
A business user platform?
An entertainment and gaming platform?
A developer platform?

Microsoft do all 5 pretty well. And I am not a fan I have to admit. And they have multiple proper versions of their OS to accomplish this. Granted not 100% perfect and grey area free.

Ubuntu does only 2 maybe really well, and the rest are sort of OK if you are an advanced user but you miss out on a lot (except gaming which seems to be more a community drive than Ubuntu themselves). And they try to squeeze it all in one bag and seem really vague and off putting. Plus with this in mind the last thing you want is a GUI or mouse cursor update ffs :/

Here is one future prediction of mine :)

Linux does the hosting and server platform the best IMO.

Cloud based computing and gaming as well is going to take over the world.

End user PC's will no longer really need full-blown OS.

Therefore doom for MS.

So perhaps my frustration as noob as it is, is all for nothing :p

it probably is tons of bug fixes. if this is true then it is a plus, if just throwing new versions of apps etc--it will just be a PITA.
If you are not ready to upgrade every month, I would just keep using LTS releases as more reliable and unlikely to break any thing major.

In news today, Obvious prediction is not at all surprising.

My prediction is also startlingly obvious, everything will kind of bumble along as it is now, with tweaks made here and there. Every so often someone will try something so zany that people will think the world is about to change. It won't, that person will meet with (relative, he/she/heshe could become a billionaire off it, so it'd be a fantastic success for them) success & things will be slightly tweaked.

After 30-40 years, someone will look back and realise that yes, the world has radically changed but very slowly.

Unless Yellowstone or Vesuvius erupt, then all bets are off and we're gonna see some serious change very quickly.
