hi guys,

just wondering if anybody knows if you can get these somehow in south africa. I have been searching and am unable to find any supplier that sells notebooks without windows. I know Dell is offering Ubuntu notebooks and netbooks on dell.com but they do not ship to sa. Are there other online shops that will ship to sa?

Alternatively, is there anyway to get a new no-os loaded notebook in SA?

I just don't see the point of buying a new notebook with windows and then formatting to install linux.

Thanks for the help!

I have the same question.

The only supplier I know of that stocks Notebooks without Windows is Hi Fi Corp. Instead they generally come loaded with trial versions of Windows.

The catch being that they are not priced accordingly. An equivalent (non grey market) Notebook with a full version of Windows seems to be about the same price.

Maybe it could be worth a Haggle though.

Yep. Bought an MSI Wind with Windows XP on it and then installed Ubuntu on it. Would have liked to have the option to pay a couple of hundred bucks less for it with Ubuntu loaded.

DELL SA

DELL have an SA operation -- up Midrand way somewhere

Why not pick up the phone and ask them -- pretty sure DELL USA ship to SA so I do not see a problem.

Whether you will get it cheaper or not

M$ seem to have sailed past the problem of getting all the Laptop manufacturers to pre-install Windows
and
Dodging all the anti-competitive lawsuits.

Just like the Shaiks -- I would be suprised if they did not have shares in M$

I just do not see the point of posting without doing some * homework*

Incredible Connection sells the Acer Aspire One netbook with Linpus Linux on it for R2000. It's a lightweight netbook but gets the job done and I'm working on it more than on my desktop pc now. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix the day I bought it, and it runs beautifully. Just needs some tweaks which you will find on the net easily.

The problem with the Linux (preinstalled) version of the Aspire One (and most other netbooks) is that only the lower spec models are available. The higher spec ones are Windows XP only.
Your best bet is to try to get a Dell.
Alternatively, people in the US have gotten refunds on their preinstalled XP, based on the fact that they never accepted the license agreement / activated it. It's a hell of a mission, though, as you might imagine.
We all feel your pain, it sucks having to pay the M$ tax.

Suggestions for a non-Wind*ws netbook purchase now (one year later)? Dell does not provide non-Wind*ws netbooks in SA. All Acer's sold by Incredible Connection have Wind*ws pre-installed (some with XP Home in 2010).
