Ubuntu Software Centre problem

Me again... getting into ubuntu proving more problematic.
Since about 5 days ago everytime I try to install a program through the software centre, the download begins and about half way through fails and says, "check your Internet connection". The connection is fine because downloads via a browser complete fine and I checked the connection via the windows side (dual boot) and could for example update iTunes.

It's just the software centre that just stops halfway through.

Some help please:eek:

The Server for S.A. is not working for me today. Failed to connect, timeout etc.
Damn, hope it will be up soon.

If I have issues with the software center I normally just use the terminal and sudo apt-get install <bla> and it seems to work fine.

Software center is a bit meh.

I am obviously a bit of a noob.
How to I use apt with files that aren't downloaded yet, I'd rather do that.

And changing the repository? How? The ubuntu forums are a bit too hectic to navigate right away. I want to install gimp to start off

sudo apt-get install <package name>
sudo apt-get install -s <pkg-name> (simulated install) To see what gives. Will not actually install.

Wajig is nice - http://www.togaware.com/linux/survivor/Wajig_Overview.html

wajig install <pkg-name>

(Server from SA still down for me, if also for you you can switch to Main Server in Software Sources).

wajig should be in the repos.

Thanks ocky, so you don't have to tell it where to get the software or does it use the same source as the software centre in settings.
Ya, I changed the source to sun.ac.za and that's going good so far.

download and install synaptic package manager- its also click and install like the software centre just not as pretty, and a lot more powerful.
