Ugly fight between SABC and Communications Minister

A hostile relationship has developed between the SABC and Minister of Communications Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams over the state broadcaster's turnaround plan, according to a report in the City Press.

Sources at the SABC told the City Press that Ndabeni-Abrahams questioned the viability of the SABC's strategy to turn around its struggling business, stating that the broadcaster's strategy does not meet the ministry's funding requirements.

This young woman came into this position guns blazing with little understanding of her portfolio. I listened to her in parliament not so long ago and am disturbed by her attitude and comprehension of issues surrounding the SABC.

I see a lot of problems with her at helm. I doubt she will last the full term in her office.

Could you kindly give a few examples where she did not comprehend issues surrounding the SABC.

Start with this recent article: https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/2019-07-03-minister-please-dont-break-the-sabc-get-it-the-guarantee-it-needs/

She tried to interfere in a broadcast of an ANC election rally: https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/2019-02-11-message-to-minister-stella-ndabeni-abrahams-help-the-sabc-dont-undermine-it/

The entire board of independent broadcast experts resigned because of her interference: https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-12-04-sabc-showdown-board-resignations-follow-clash-with-new-minister-ndabeni-abrahams-but-common-ground-can-still-be-found/

Before that she interfered with the board's statutory independence to restructure the company and retrench employees: https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/2018-12-04-why-communications-minister-is-legally-obliged-to-respect-sabcs-independence-and-work-with-its-board/

Do you need any more examples?

I agree that the SABC should burn but Eskom does not deserve a single solitary cent more. They just need to get rid of the corruption and the over-the-top staff compliment. If they do that then they are going to be extremely profitable at current electricity prices. In fact they will show such a huge profit that their pricing structure would be tantamount to theft and unnecessary milking of tax payers money.

I'd rather have a working electricity suppler thank you, sure it can be replaced by the private sector eventually but lets keep them going until that is a reality.

Nrws reports quote the DA as stating that she misled parliament: https://www.fin24.com/Companies/ICT/communications-minister-deliberately-misled-parly-about-sabc-bailout-charges-das-van-damme-20190708
The letter describes the SABC as "ultimately only an implementing agent for the Department of Communications", a statement Van Damme described as "flabbergasting".

"The Broadcasting Act and as confirmed in High Court in the SOS Support Public Broadcasting Coalition judgment makes the SABC’s independence clear," said Van Damme.
