Six million households could face blackouts this winter because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, ministers have been warned, as they look to bolster electricity supplies by prolonging the life of coal and nuclear power stations.

The Times has been told that the government’s “reasonable” worst-case scenario, which has been drawn up by officials from across Whitehall, says that there could be widespread gas shortages if Russia goes further in cutting off supplies to the EU.

A minister said the briefing suggested that electricity could have to be rationed for up to six million homes at the start of next year, mostly at peaks in the morning and evening. The curbs could last more than a month, causing energy prices to rise again and leaving GDP lower than forecast for years to come.

They inflicted this upon themselves by those ridiculous sanctions.

Keep on buying energy from a country that invaded its neighbour for reasons that kept on changing depending on which way the wind blew and help fuel their war machine? Yes, that seems like a good idea, especially when said country clearly has expansionist goals which could involve them coming for you.

It is self-inflicted, but it is not ridiculous. Just like it's not ridiculous that you're on my ignore list with views like this. (You're probably for some COVID-related BS since that's the only reason I have ever have added any fools to my ignore list.)

the UK has a glut of gas at the moment due to the imported LNG so OP article doesnt make sense (the bit I could read before the paywall)

Only reason the lights will go off for a lot of people is because they can’t afford to keep them on anymore. Energy providers are taking the piss with their prices because Ofgem increased the price cap.

Yeah we halved our gas use the last month with warmer weather and the bill still went up

Another increase coming in October

Come to Sunny South Africa for your summer holiday, included in the price is an experience of rolling blackouts to get you used to what awaits you in your winter months. I think this could be a bargain holiday experience.

The world needs to urgently focus on becoming energy independent again. Time to kick "climate change" and "clean energy" right between the legs. Countries need more coal-fired stations. They need more fossil fuels. Drilling for oil. They need to do this urgently to save themselves. The countries sticking to fossil fuels, coal power are the ones who will lead the world. The rest of the countries will all become third-world countries reliant on the world leaders.

So is SA going to lead the world or are we doomed? Make up your mind...
