Meteorologists suffered online abuse when reporting on the heatwave and links to climate change:

Well deserved. My son in the UK says it was a completely overhyped media frenzy. According to the media:

funny story, my water doesn't come from southern, it comes from iwnl. Sooo... sprinklers it is :D

Back in the 70's they expected that heavy industry would expand significantly (eg the steelworks on Teeside) so they decided to build a future proof water supply to cope with double the capacity. At the time lots of people called it a white elephant but today the north east seldom gets under 80% capacity of the reservoir, even in dry times.

DId your son in the UK miss the wildfires and people losing their homes on the news?

No, but it's not comparable to the fires we had in the peninsula mountains that I spent three nights and days fighting, carrying everything you need up the mountains even at night. My son witnessed that.

I was 40 years old and 2IC of the fire section. Do you know how difficult it is to account for members at all times on the irregular ground, on the ground and in the dark? Arranging meals and requesting rest periods, water and food supplies. Radio batteries and the rest, Even toilet paper? Glad the 4x4 club boys did their bit and transported the supplies needed, food and equipment.

The worst was losing contact with a member in the dark, Could be hurt, or have fallen down the mountain. My job as 2IC was to find him while IC led the team. I did every time, none injured, just a wrong turning but I walked three times the distance of the team.

Temperatures without humidity are useless.

40c can be deadly or a walk in the park depending on the humidity.

Humidity there is so low that it is hardly worth mentioning.
You just sweat a drop and it basically evaporates immediately.

Not that I see London is much worse at the moment

But should the humidity pick up, a Kuwaiti wouldn't exactly call London comfortable.

there are higher temperatures with higher humidity in other countries, like vietnam or cambodia for example.

the weather forecast does not correctly record the temp and humidity when measured on the ground. it gets insane.

the fear mongering with the heat is ridiculous, heat (and cold) has been killing millions of people each year since existence.

The mountain is treacherous at night. Always wondered how the guys doing the tougher puffer who had to run the length of the peninsula at night did it. Had a similar fire fighting experience on Hangklip some years ago.

It's still early summer and drought could worsen:
July saw temperature records broken multiple times and rainfall is down 76%. Further periods of dry and hot weather are forecast by the Met Office.
Southern Water is introducing a hosepipe ban on 5 August, for customers in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

For now, other companies have not announced hosepipe bans - but customers in the south of England and the Midlands have been encouraged to use less water.
The National Farmers' Union is watching the situation closely. Berry farmers have already reported losing some of their crop.

Vegetables such as potatoes - which are due to be harvested next month - are at particular risk due to their high-water content.

The effects could be felt into next year, as farmers are delaying planting crops such as rapeseed because the soil is too dry.
In 1976, the Drought Act created emergency powers to turn off domestic and industrial water supplies.

In 2018, the widespread drought led to crop failures, which raised food prices. Multiple water restrictions were put in place.

Heatwave in France affecting water supplies, farming, and nuclear power stations:
The prime minister's office said it was France's worst recorded drought. Water use is being restricted in 93 regions.

Dry conditions are expected to continue for at least the next two weeks.

The state energy company EDF has had to reduce output at some nuclear power plants, as river temperatures are too high to provide sufficient cooling, AFP news agency reports.
