Yes, this was not about the temperature yesterday.
Check the post I quoted before, poster claims he survived 42c at 100% humidity (Which I can believe for a very short time, but this didn't sound like a short amount of time)

Protein breaks down at 42C and the human body is composed mainly of protein. It's the reason the immune system causes the temperature regulatory system to overheat the body during a viral infection known as a fever to close to deadly levels.

This is because a virus is composed of protein and the body can reduce a lot of the viral load while suffering a bit of collateral damage itself. But containing many more cells than viruses, the body manages to usually survive.

The least affected places will be on the coast adjacent to cold ocean currents, due to the large thermal inertia of the sea. The largest effects will be continental climates in far northern latitudes, such as Siberia.

The Western Cape says hello...

Though by your map the UK should be least affected (with Chile/Argentina and north east North America)

Difficult to explain, but other Saffas here can probably confirm that high temps here just feel way hotter than they do back in SA. Down to it being an island that’s designed to retain as much heat as possible.

Thankfully that spell is over. Much cooler today.

It feels that way in the Netherlands, but it might be because you get used to it being colder on average and when that 25°C day comes it suddenly feels like the Devil is in town.

Also public transport and a lot more walking to get to your destination as opposed to driving and then sitting in a house/office built with insulation in mind.

We hit 38°C yesterday and it was in the deep 20s overnight. Without an aircon you just cannot get rid of the heat - no wind, nothing.

That all said: there's nothing quite like Hoedspruit hitting 40. **** that - Satan's Sauna.

So are we going to have a hot summer in SA. Last summer was a bit cool and rainy. Hope the ANC planned for the drought seems to come around every 4 - 5 years.
Still la nina so should be looking at roughly the same as beginning of year, maybe a little warmer as we swing out but not much

And of course anc planned, we dredged the dams, built new ones, more than doubled our storage for the next cycle... oh wait, that was just me day dreaming again

How is it railway tracks in the UK get all bent out of shape, but ours thru the karoo stay fine?

When rails are installed, they have gaps to allow for thermal expansion. If the temperature goes beyond the maximum expected, buckling can occur. That looks like fairly old single track, not exactly high-speed mainline...

Edit: Image search throws up this story:

There has been an increase in vehicle breakdowns due to engines overheating.
