Hmmm... UK prefers broadband to dialup... I just can't imagine why someone would enjoy a 24/7 connection, connected at a min of 2MB that doesn't clog up the phone line, compared to a dialup connection, connecting at a MAX of 52Kbps that uses a phone line and constantly disconnects... oh wait... no it slipped out my mind again. Ah well....

ADSL is more than affordable

I cant believe half the complaining i see on here....about pricing, of adsl, on here....

The price of ADSL has come down considerably and so have the ISP's cost come down, caps have also been increased,

Believe me TELKOM could bring it down more I am sure, but a company has to be profitable, they have shareholders to answer too,

Pricing is never set according to what is somewhere else it is based on affordability, anyone who knows anything about economics should know this

As for service from Telkom, apart from the occassional down time, and the slow international speeds at the end of the month ( people abusing the system downloading as much as they can) I have nothing to complain about,

They had mine up in no time 2 weeks max and it was working first time...and still is,

Believe i know of many people in the UK and the States, who have similiar problems with downtime and service...people just cant do with out their internet fix ( get out there and have a life )

If you are using your adsl for anything LEGAL believe me you need no more than 10gb account and 384... and with what a that 10gb account costs today...you can go up to... 512 ( this doenst apply to all but most )

And lastly I dont believe the best way of dealing with TELKOM is bashing them, the best way is to work with them towards a common goal....

The best kind of critiscism is constructive and will end up in a win win situation for both parties,

No I am not just, happen to be the boss just kidding...

I just think thats it about time that we have something good to say and maybe post when we do have a good experience,

We seem to forget to point out when the good things do happen and are really quick to complain...

ADSL is more than affordable????

Are you kidding me? Most South Africans can't afford a telephone line, let alone an ADSL connection. Just because ADSL is affordable to you on your wonderful salary, doesn't mean it's affordable to the rest of us.

If you are using your adsl for anything LEGAL believe me you need no more than 10gb account and 384... and with what a that 10gb account costs today...you can go up to... 512 ( this doenst apply to all but most )

My goodness, what an uninformed statement. Have you ever tried video and audio streaming and seen how much of a chunk it takes out of our HUGE 3GB limit. Or is that classified as illegal behaviour in your books. You obviously don't do much online gaming either.

I just think thats it about time that we have something good to say and maybe post when we do have a good experience

Maybe you should do some more reading because there have been Telkom compliment posts. Maybe few and far between, but thats because Telkom don't give us much to compliment them on.

BTW, complaining about complaining is somewhat pointless. If you don't like people expressing their opinions and frustrations, then skip over the post and go onto the next one.

dj_sam_antha,

I see what you're saying about profitability and all that economics stuff but...

These are big, fundamental problems that are bring raised here. And if you read enough forums on this site, you'll see that Telkom does get praised when it does do something good... even if Telkom is actually SUPPOSED to perform that duty.

However, the problems that are continually been raised here are very critical. To name a few:
(i) The expensive ADSL line rental that needs to be paid to Telkom for an indefinite period. I know we can't compare Telkom with other operators BUT if Telkom is basically the only operator in the world that charges such a fee, should we not complain?? If it wasn't for this factor, I would have applied for ADSL a long time ago. Am still on 56K dialup at home.

(ii) To state that 10GB is enough for legal purposes... well, if you use ADSL fow what it was really intended for (NOT just html, pop, etc...), then you'll see that 10GB is not anywhere near enough. Sure, a few people who use ADSL moderately will be happy with this cap, but not for those people who use what ADSL was INTENDED to be used for.

(iii) The most troublesome factor though, even more worrisome than Telkom, is the DoC and Poison Ivy (our minister). A lot of complaints have be issued about this department's inability to ensure that telecoms prices in this country stay at a reasonable level. The fact that they also seem to enjoy trampling on the "I" (independence) of ICASA is another problem that seems to occur a lot.

It might seem like we're cry babies in the way we complain about Telkom and the DoC, as if SA doesn't have greater problems than the telecoms crises BUT.... the fact is that it is OUR right to complain if we believe we're being riipped off or not being given value for our much earned money.

If it wasn't for sites such as myadsl and hellkom.co.za which have allowed consumers to complain, I doubt that the government would have paid more attention to the telecoms industry as it is doing now. As for me, I'll keep acting like a cry baby until I get the service I deserve from these telecoms operators for the money I'm forking out. As I stated, it is my right.
