UK suffers a literacy crisis

For a 1st world country, this is rather shocking . What the hell are they teaching them if they can't read?

The huge "reading recovery" package to boost the skills of five- and six-year-old children who are falling behind in primary school shows how worried the government is about its stalling literacy drive.

The rapid progress made by pupils of all abilities after Labour came to power in 1997 have ended and results are now barely improving. The government is especially sensitive about figures showing that more than 20% of boys and 13% of girls are leaving primary school without being able to read properly.

Yeah well here we also have people on internet forums who manage to turn any news story into a comparison with this country.....

The story is scary though, 20% illiteracy rate for a 1st world country. That is worse than Zimbabwe ( who by the way have a fantastic literacy rate).

What's encouraging though is the amount of money and effort that they're putting in to try to rectify the situation.

Its also interesting to see the joint initiative by their government and ngo's.

Well at least their numeracy ought to be better ... I have trouble when there's five figures in front of the decimal point (... and that's just for a beer) :D .

As heading say UK litter-acy crisis!

Seems to me Dominic had it right when he wrote the title "UK suffers a literacy crisis" and the article he linked to is headed "More intensive lessons for children failing to read"

There is only one person here saying this refers to "African immigrants in UK" and that's you.

So? there may be many literacy lacking africans in the UK maybe! If you note I asked an question. Why it came to mind is the headlines about the schools locally doing so bad. Another system not working?
The article do not enlarge who the 13% lacking reading skills is, maybe there is a link!

the 20% wasnt referring to illiterates, it was referring to people who were not meeting the expected levels for their age (i actually DID read the article).

as in 80% of the kids were satisfactory or better, and 20% needed to do better to meet the minimum level for their age.

now go draw any comparisons or conclusions you desire:)

Your point being???
If you note I asked an question.
Generally if you ask a question ... there is a question mark, not an exclamation mark.
Why it came to mind is the headlines about the schools locally doing so bad. Another system not working?

Ah ... so the ever evil UK government is hiding the facts ... perhaps you could provide some substance to this argument with a few references

Ah your original question ... why should their origin matter if they are rightfully in the UK?

Answer: it doesn't matter

Question: Does this really matter?

Answer: Yes to the idiots (from both sides of the spectrum) who wish to make political capital out of this i.e. that children, rightfully in the UK but who didn't originate there, need remedial teaching. Wow, shocker, headlines for the News at 10.
