Yes there is in cases like this where a rapist is allowed to walk free at all because of his immunity.

Clearly
There are thousands of diplomats all over the world - these instances are rare.
It's not a case of him walking free, the police were simply unable to detain him at the time - this is little different to an accused being granted bail.
The State Dept is not going to simply let this go.
If his country refuses to cooperate, they can be assured of all manner of repercussions

Diplomatic immunity is a very elastic "Get out of jail" card and I recall some Saudi or other royalty getting off scot free after various crimes.
In another case in UK, the wife of an American diplomat killed a young cyclist in a hit & run and, although not having immunity, was spirited out of the country by embassy staff.
This woman?
Family of the diplomat have immunity.

Family members forming part of the household
of diplomatic agents enjoy precisely the same
privileges and immunities as do the sponsoring
diplomatic agents

The US citizen Anne Sacoolas is due to face criminal proceedings in the UK, charged with causing the death by dangerous driving of the 19-year-old motorcyclist Harry Dunn.
The 44-year-old is accused of killing the teenager in a road crash outside the US military base RAF Croughton in Northamptonshire on 27 August 2019.

You're not gonna change my mind. A rapist was let go because of his immunity which should never have been the case.

Just my opinion that diplomatic immunity should never count for savage criminals.
The reason diplomatic immunity exists is to prevent spurious prosecution's in an attempt to sway a country's diplomacy. Sure, crimes should be punished but if the home country feels that their diplomats are being unfairly targeted it opens up avenue for retaliation against the other countries diplomats by the country that feels aggrieved.

Giving a visiting diplomat immunity is more about protecting your own country's diplomats who would have similar protections abroad. No one wants rapists to get away with their crimes but also its not inconceivable that false allegations could be made in order to put pressure on the home country.

A killer was let go in the UK. She left on the next available USAF flight out of the country within a day of causing an accident that killed a teenager.

Unfortunately there are dishonest opportunists everywhere, in every profession.
One of the underlying reasons for diplomatic immunity is varying laws (sometimes underpinned by cultural or religious norms) from country to country. Those laws in the host country may not be compatible with those of the sending country - death penalty could be an example, or having one's hand chopped off if guilty of theft.

The system generally works well, but it is largely dependent on the integrity of individuals.
The State Dept policy is that the safety and security of their citizens should never play 2nd fiddle to a visiting foreign national enjoying immunity.

There is going to be a schit storm over this incident. Either the fleeing diplomat will face the consequences of his actions, or his govt will.
I doubt his govt would want to risk potential funding being throttled for the sake of a rapist that humiliated the country as a representative to the UN.

She refuses to return to the UK for the criminal trial and the us gov has refused to extradite her, she will most likely be tried in absentia and escape whatever sentence is handed down.

I've always been of the opinion if someone flees after a criminal incident - well, they are covered by immunity while in the host nation.
However, criminal prosecution should then proceed in the home nation led by prosecutors of the host nation where the incident occurred.

That ain't gonna happen either. There was a civil trial though that was settled, the judge was quite scathing wrt her claiming she accepts full responsibility.
