Unable to establish PPPoE connection with stable sync

Hi guys,

My 10Mbps line has had a stable sync for the past few weeks and nothing appears to have changed but for over 24 hours we have been unable to establish a PPPoE connection, PPPoE fails at the discovery stage indicating that there is no remote hardware to communicate with.

I've tested with multiple routers, using multiple devices to establish the PPPoE connection using multiple different ISP accounts.

SNR Margin (dB): 22.4 down 6.8 up
Attenuation (dB): 11.5 down 7.5 up

Hoping someone here may have an idea about what could cause such an issue, since Telkom seems to be clueless.

Log a fault at Telkom...

You more than likely need a port reset or something strange like that.

Fault is logged, but they say there is no fault found. Port reset made no difference.

Insist on a port-reset.

Or even better, ask them to lower your sync (which will create a port-reset automatically), and log a new fault tomorrow asking them to increase the sync.

PPPoE failing at Discovery, means you're not seeing the Telkom BRAS. There's either a fault at your port, exchange, or something between your exchange and the BRAS.

Have you checked for Telkom faults in your area? What's the first 6 digits of your land line? I can check for you then.

I already insisted on a port reset yesterday, it made no difference. I did a fault check now and there are no faults in my area.

Seems like I'm going to have to wait until a techie eventually gets to it...

Even after providing details on this issue the technician at Telkom still believes that this is a copper problem.

If anyone knows someone at Telkom who could possibly get them to fix the BRAS connectivity at the exchange, I would really appreciate any assistance.

What idiots (the technicians, obviously)! If your line is syncing and the stats are good then this has NOTHING to do with copper. My suggestion is the following: Instead of trying to communicate with these "Technicians" in "technical language" by explaining to them that your PPPoE session won't establish despite a stable sync, tell them the following instead: "My line is syncing at 10 Meg. The DSL Sync light on my modem is a Solid Green, but the internet light is a SOLID RED and I have tried to use the Telkom guest account but it is still RED. My modem works at my friends' house, and his doesn't work on my line. So clearly there is a problem at the exchange.". Then leave it in their "capable" hands and it should get resolved eventually based on that more primitive-minded feedback that they can actually understand (just replace 10 Meg with your line speed)

Tried doing that initially, it's been almost a week and the BRAS is still down.
