smtp.wbs.co.za doesn't work for me therefore I don't even bother with it. Of all the attempts I've made to send mail on it, none have been successful!

This goes to show what a bunch of arseholes WBS really are!

smtp.wbs.co.za is unreliable, and a while back I was using smtp.gmail.com for one of my addys, but then I was forced to revert back to smtp.wbs.co.za due to problems with international bandwidth on WBS' iBurst...I don't like the idea that every single iBurst customer [we are not 'users' ;)] is going to have to use smtp.wbs.co.za - will just degrade smtp for everyone & the dinky-little-8086 used by WBS will be thrashing & crashing every 3 seconds...:(

I sent any e-mail though the WBs mail server the other day, and it went through damn quickly.
From what I can tell they are running a mail cluster now. I haven't had any problems to date with the WBS mail server. It's a hell of a lot faster of late than it was a couple weeks ago.

</me starts a conversation with WBS mail server Humina Humina Hooooo>

Have yet to see anything other than 1 or 2. My guess it's just two independant mail servers with connection based load balancing to them.

Amazing! They force clients to use their SMTP server, they limit emails to 10 MB, yet they still advertise all the packages as optimized for email, amongst others...

***** these guys are just leaving themselves open to shots now, are they retarded? I mean spammers can still spam, this rule doesn't stop anyone from running a smtp server on thier own machine, all this does is inconvenience the legitimit users. And then limiting to 10MB, unbelievable, it's like every week they try take another thing away untill we're left with basically nothing.

HTTP goes through thier proxy, mail through thier SMTP server and in some weird way the idiots responsible for these desitions think they're helping and making a better service, and if this makes press and they are asked to comment they'll say "99% of users love it but a tiny 1% minority of dirty pedo's and druggy bandwidth abusers who hate puppies and assasinated princess Diana hate it"

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'info@anime-za.net', Server: 'anime-za.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

As you can see, I cannot send e-mail at all. I have tried to set up SSL and that refuses to work either. It is a complete block on the SMTP protocol on port 25. I have changed the port number to something else other than 25 and I can see my mail server with an immediate rejection as expected.

I consider this a violation of my rights and a violation of the good practice of an Internet Service provider

Going back to dialup and getting rid of iBurst! No f**king ISP is going to deny me access to my f**king email.

Probably just a bunch of short-sighted financial spin doctors and no technical people in the WBS management. It's time they realise that running a public Internet service is far removed from running a dedicated Lotto network.

What's next?

* blocking porn sites
* blocking sites with any kind of download
* blocking FTP

This isn't internet, this is the kind of **** you'd get in a dictator state!

Ordering ADSL tomorrow! I hate Telkom but I have no other choice!

These WBS punks are really clueless wannabe Big Brothers. It's a pity I bought the UTD, but at this stage I really wish that they collapse, or at least get taken over by somebody else. I don't think ANY ISP can have a worse attitude / management style (huh?) / technical capabilities, not even a one-person startup business...

Slogan change: Captivity has never felt this bad!

This is possibly the worst kind of attitude any business in SA could have...

If I ran iBurst...

I would have raised the caps to 9 gbyte across the board
p2p wouldn't be shaped
and I would install a proper bandwidth manager only when it passed my stringent specs and only for the purposes of the cap!

I would spend a good few days at Northcliff tower and maybe reposition the antennas to try and solve the problem, with network analyzers and the help of a few users getting bad performance

iBurst being terminated today

That's it.
Can't send mail through my paid-for off-site SMTP servers.
iBurst UTD going back later today (Tuesday).
Sorry, WBS. I'd hoped you were going to make a go of things. I'd recommended iBurst to several family and friends, but now I repent.
Back to DSL-only - and an extra account in case 3GB isn' enough.

For many the smtp server would be fine; However the following are problems for me:

1) 10MB max per email (will be increased this week but still not enough)
2) Sometimes mails just don't make it
3) Not willing to adjust my domain's SPF (anti-spam) settings to use wbs

As an aside, while the general idea behind this is sound and has been implemented internationally, the specific implementation done here is just not feasible.

WBS's reasoning for max message size is also a penny wise pound foolish approach ... amazing how sucky MyWireless can manage to handle the smtp loads ....
