Hi All,

I have read alot of posts on these forums regarding the recharging of pre-paid sims and the checking of balances (prepaid + contract) via the vodafone data cards (huawei, Option, etc) but it seems it is not possible. I did read that it is possible with Sierra Aircard 850+Novatel card but it doesn't seem anyone has had success doing it with a any other card. (Including me). I don't like getting nasty surprises in the post and swopping sims is also getting irritating. If anyone knows more about you may enlighten me.

I also checked the specs on the Hauwei data cards and they do have a socket for a 3 wire headset. http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/products/view.do?id=145&pageId=null#q2
http://corporate.proximus.be/download/VMC_Huawei.pdf

(That 'could' be used to dial out and to get acc balances and recharge prepaid sims) Would you suggest buying a headset from MTN then ? MTN at least knows about the headsets and are offering them to their clients. Vodacom on the other hand denies that this socket exists and they also deny that it is at all possible to make voice calls with the card. Not true because I have made and recieved calls with the card.

Great so all I need is a three wire earphone. Does anyone know where we can get some of these ? (Seeing that Vodacom has no idea what I am talking about)

Feel free to correct where I am wrong or to point out where I have maybe missed a post regarding these issues.

Regards

www.vodacom4me.co.za should be used to check your usage and balance etc.

[This was also posted on MTN Forums]

Just tested a "PHF For Motorola T/V-Series (Univ)" headset (from local Vodashop) with the VC E620 card and it works like a charm so this will work with the MTN E620 card aswell. Got a VC sim in here now and just dialed "5151" (while connected via HSDPA) and checked my balance (Family top-up) - no problems.

Also made a call with it and had a quick conversation. Had the person call back to the sim's number and picked up the call using the Huawei software. Works 100%. Great!!

Anyway so my voice call, balance, recharge and headset queries are all history now.

Didn't u get the headset with the E620 card?
It came with both the MTN E620s I received (one 4 office use, one my personal), looks like MTN removed the ext antenna (now charging R350 for it), and replaced it with the headset.
The Sierra Wireless card works well with its menu like the VC/MTN/VM menu on your phone to do account balance check, recharge credit, even banking.
Can't see it on the MTN E620 card though, ... but u cud still just go to the phone / sms function on the card dashboard, send *101# (or whateva for your network) and get the balance.... should be a free call/sms?

The card's software does not recognise the *XXX# USSD commands

that sux... you're right! I just tried it now. I haven't tried with the E620 yet, I have been able to do it with the Sierra WL card, just assumed it worked with all.
Sorry 4 my BS remark

No prob - I was referring to the E620 re the USSD commands - but using a MTN prepaid card, I can at least phone 555 with the dashboard and get a voice update (MTN card with earpiece) on my usage so its fine - don't know what will happen when I move to Virgin sim once it has been sorted (if ever)
