Hi everyone :)

Late last week I received an automated call, which I missed. When I checked my voicemail, it was something about pressing 1 to subscribe to some content, or press x to decline.

I then received an SMS on the same day saying the following: "Welcome to Mobigr8! Go 2 http://tinyurl.com/cugesqh to login & get gr8 content. U R subscribed at R3 daily. 2 stop SMS STOP to 31355 Help? 0839008293 (VAS)".

I've already gotten hold of Cell C Support on Twitter, kudos on them for responding promptly. However, wanted to ask if anyone else's gotten this rubbish, and what recourse we have against these cowards who hide behind false debit orders and content charges. I'm just tired of being taken for a ride.

Thanks

@OP a debit order is something that goes off your bank account, this is known as a premium rated service.

The networks don't like blocking these services at their level as they make a lot of money out them, actually more than the actual WASP billing you. You either got subscribed by entering in your number on a landing page form or someone typed your number in (it was either random or finger trouble).

Now since CellC has no strict double opt in process, a standard disclaimer is used and your signed up.

Your only recourse is to lodge a complaint with WASPA and wait a couple of months for a refund. But most important, reply "STOP" to that shortcode unless you want them to continue to bill you.

Thanks, I replied with "STOP" to the number. I always thought that replying would actually make them charge me/ they're sussing out trying to see whose number is valid.

I know what a debit order is, hence I said debit orders and content charges. Debit orders being for the scum for fraudulently debit people's accounts for random rubbish, and content charges being this premium service thing.

I'll hear from Cell C. My mom's been duped out of a lot of money from fraudulent debit orders, and we've struggled to get her money back. One day is one day, I'm going to take on these fraudsters and put them in jail or somewhere where they can't do what they're doing.

Good luck with that. Most of the time these fraudsters are in a different country.
