Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
ADSL, or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, is a technology that allows connections at high speeds over existing copper lines. This allows connections to the Internet at speeds that are almost 10 times faster than existing modems, and also allow 24x7 connectivity for a low fixed price. ADSL circuits are supplied by Telkom (just like existing telephone, Diginet and ISDN lines), and an ISP provides the connection to the Internet.
East Coast Access are offering ADSL connections countrywide, and we offer various advantages over our competitors:
Deal with a small company - why spend time on hold, 'talking' to a computer when you can deal with real human beings?
Deal with one company - we will take care of your ADSL connection, from interfacing with Telkom through to providing your connection to the Internet.
Deal with a knowledgeable company - we have been in the Internet business since 1995.
Deal with a flexible company - we can offer options ranging from shared mail and virus services for your home network through to installing and managing a server dedicated to your company.
Got questions? We have the answers....
Is ADSL a dial up technology
Yes it is, but Telkom does not bill by time - instead it is a flat rate irrespective of how long you stay online.
At what speed will I connect?
ADSL is asymmetric - that means that the download speed is different from the upload speed. In South Africa Telkom allows a 512kb/s download speed and a 256kb/s upload speed.
WOW - that is almost ten times faster than my 56kb/s modem - can that be true?
Yes - it is true!

What will it cost to setup?
We charge a R250 setup fee. Telkom charge R404 to install an ADSL link and an ADSL modem will cost about R2000. They will also try to sell you their Internet service - be careful that you don't sign for that by mistake!
And the rental cost?
R399 per month plus the ADSL line rental from Telkom which will cost R680 for residential customers and R800 for business customers (VAT inclusive.)
But other ISP's are charging less!
That is true - but at R399 per month we do not have a 3GB bandwidth cap. If you use our service you can download as much as you want!
What is a bandwidth cap?
A bandwidth cap is a download limit beyond which an ISP (other than ECA) will restrict your access, either by reducing your connection speed to 9.6kb/s or by charging you extra for additional downloads.
That is sneaky - are they allowed to do that?
Yes they can - remember, that is why they charge less.
Can I use ADSL for my home or company network?
Yes you can. We can provide the technology for you to share the ADSL link as well as to provide firewall and mail services to your entire company (or home).
But I was told that one cannot use mail servers on an ADSL link. Are you saying I can do that?
Yes you can. We can setup the mail server to work within the restrictions of the Telkom ADSL link.
What about security? Is that an issue now that I am connected all the time?
Yes it is. You have to protect your network from hackers and crackers who will try to take advantage of your systems.
Can't I just install a firewall or something?
Yes you can. You need to protect against hack attempts, spam, viruses, open relays, open proxies, unpatched systems, DDoS's, etc.
That sounds complicated - will I be able to do that?
Most technically competent system administrators will be able to handle that for you. Or you could install one of our Gatekeeper devices and let us manage it for you.

Can I get a free trial?
Yes you can - we will let you use free it for 2 weeks, provided you sign a debit order with us. We will not bill you at all if we receive a cancellation notice in writing within 2 weeks of the start of your trial.
Is ADSL available in my area?
Telkom provide a utility on their website that will tell you when your area will have ADSL.
I want to sign up - what do I need to do?
Contact us by email or phone and we will gladly process your application.
